My biggest problem with that 2nd article is that there is a serious difference (IMHO) between blind nationalism and being taught to appreciate what you have, and he doesn't seem to think there is a distinction between the two. While I'll be the first to admit that there's plenty wrong with American politics and whatnot, I don't see why a day like the 4th can't be viewed like thanksgiving or something, like a chance to appreciate what we've got in this country.
Like I said, I'm no flag-waving team-america junkie, but I think a lot of the criticism of patriotism in general is pretty weak. That's like saying we shouldn't be proud to drive Acuras because occasionally they break down.
