Doesn't matter if your car is "chipped" or not. If you downshift, the engine is going to match whatever rpm it is suppose to be. If it's suppose to be at 10,000, then that's where it's going to go and your engine is toast. I've gone from 6th to 3rd before and caught it before it reached past the red line. If you are sure you caught it before the revs got up too high, you should be fine. If you are unsure, only thing you can possibly do is a leak down test and a compression test. The rev limit only works if you accelerate and will not let you go past 8200/8400. Downshifting will let you go past that.
