Transmission Issue

1990 Legend 4 Dr is having power issues. Seems as though I'm stuck in 2nd gear. Never get any power when hitting the gas from a standstill.
Was told by one mechanic who works on Acuras that it may be as simple as a sylenoid valve??sp?? The valve that sits under the gear shift.
If the problem is not solved by that then might actually have to go into the transmission itself.

If last option is necessary need some recommendations on transmission places in the LA area.
