Confusing Problem!?!
This is more of a general question than it pertains specifically to Vigors, but I thought I'd give it a shot and maybe someone like BOB01721 will shed some light on the problem!
Here's the story, I want to give an accurate description so this may take some writing. I own a 94 Vigor GS automatic and take extraordinary care of this car. I always have it serviced at the proper intervals by professionals. Tonight as I was driving down the freeway with the Cruise Control on at about 75 mph, after about 50 miles with no problems, all of the sudden this is exactly what happened: Both my tachometer and speedometer dropped to zero in a split second, the very next second the light on the gauge cluster that indicates whether the car is in P, N, D4, D3 etc... turned off and my car seemed to disengage into what felt like neutral because there was no throttle response. Then after 3-7 seconds the engine engaged again and "D4" turned back on in the instrument cluster. I think the engine stayed on but I cant say for sure, I had the radio going and couldnt hear exactly. While this happened all other lighting and power options kept working fine: headlights, radio, interior lights on gauges etc. The Cruise Control then came back on but I promptly turned it off because I thought that might have caused the problem. About a minute later the tachometer and speedometer went off again but this time the engine stayed engaged. After about 5 more minutes the first scenario happened again with the gauges dropping and the car disengaging then re-engaging, but this time the "SRS" light on the cluster turned on as well for about 5 seconds then turned off (Sorry I couldn't tell if the engine was just in neutral or if it actually turned off so-to-speak, I am pretty sure it stayed on). My Vigor has always stood up to the Acura name. This time it gave me a scare, I thought I might actually have to call roadside assistance. Here are some other factors to note: I recently had my fuel filter professionally replaced. When I stepped out of the car after parking, I smelled gasoline, or maybe my mind was just tricking me. Either way I checked and didn't see any leaking gas. Is it posible there is a leak or clog in the fuel line that caused a temporary shutdown or something to do with the recently installed fuel filter? Would this explain the gauges going down suddenly? Oh and one more thing, no it was not overheating, the engine temp was well below 1/4 on the scale, I live in Minneapolis, I dont need to worry too much about overheating, haha. Finally, does anyone have a reasonable explanation for this phenomena? I will get it professionally inspected/ diagnosed ASAP but this is really a stumper to me. I would like to know beforehand if possible to know if I should drive it at all, I haven't driven it since, I don't know if I dare. Sorry for the long explanation, thanks for the help! New Info: I tried to start it today and it starts fine but then instantly shuts off because it revs too high. Is the torque-converter possibly locked-up (TCC solenoid?). It's as if its in gear when I start it. If so, how does this explain what happened on the freeway with it disengaging and the gauges going out. Maybe there are a combination of problems although the likelihood of that seems low. Last edited by AcuraVigorOwner : 10-28-07 at 07:47 PM. |
