Fuel Pump...

Anyone done one? Wondering where the fuel pump is located in reference to the car...I'd rather just cut a whole in the floor above the pump and do it that way. everything is so rusted underneath that im not sure if it will come apart, or worse, be able to get it back together. Any one know of where i could find this info maybe?

Make sure it is the pump and not just the main fuel relay that needs to be replaced.

im pretty sure its the pump. im having an intermittent problem from time to time where it wont start, crack the line at the filter and i have no fuel presure. keep turning the key off an on and off an on... finally after hitting the tank with a hammer and keep trying it, it finally starts and runs fine. almost like the pump has a dead spot. but i didnt find out about this "main relay" thing til today, so now im tempted to try that. i have the pump sitting in my garage so i dont know really what to do now...

Sounds exactly like a main relay to me, bet it happens when it is hot inside the car. Check it out its a lot cheaper to repair the relay than discover the pump did not need to be replaced in the first place.

you're right, usually it happens when its been sitting all day in the sun, it gets about 140 degrees inside the car. I think i'll try the relay first and see what happens. much easier to fix that than try the pump i guess. haha. its my daily driver so i gotta try and fix it this weekend, i hate driving my nice car to work everyday, people worry me. so, off to the garage i go... thanks for the help!!!!

If buying a new relay it can be substituted with one from an Accord but the cheap fix is to re-solder the
the solder points (even if they look ok) inside the relay. Just pull the cover off and take your time.

A little time saver:

Getting to the relay is a pain! It's stuffed way up behind the driver side kick panel -- way above the fuse box. One 10mm bolt holds it in, but you'll want a long extension and a universal joint for the socket.

Once you get the old one out and plug in the connector for the new relay, you can just stuff it back in anywhere -- it doesn't have to get bolted back way up in there where it was. It's a nice idea to use a wire tie on the relay so it doesn't get jostled around, but don't even try to reinstall it where it came from.

I have been trying to find the relay in my 1990 Legend. What year was you giving the location for? I've been looking closer to the brake pedal to the left of the steering wheel. Is it located closer to the fender? Do you have to move anything to see it?

Sorry. I was giving the location for a Vigor. Don't know about a Ledge. But I wouldn't be surprised if Ledges had their main relays in a similar location. Also, it'll go a lot easier if you have a replacement relay in your hand when you go looking for it. That way, you'll know what you're looking for.

On the other note... I have no idea whether or not Ledge relays get their ground from the relay bracket -- they might. Vigs don't, so Ledges probably don't, but I can't be sure.

Hope this helps.

I'll second Bob's diagnosis of the Main Relay. We've both done the job and have re-flowed the solder joints and it's been working flawlessly since. Hondas in general have this issue and it's very well known to the Honda community. I too do not know where the Ledge Main Relay is located, but Accords are located similar to the location of the Vigor. Above the Fuse box under the kick panel. Some wire harnesses may be in the way, but you should see it after some digging. There are tips and tricks to get to it, and write ups of previous owners that have done the job. With the right tools, and write-ups, I was able to get it in, and out in 30 mins. Soldering took me another 15. I was able to bolt it back on, only because I like doing things like that.

When I bought my Vigor a couple of weeks ago it wasn't running, I was told by the previous owner that it was the fuel pump. One way to check it out is to check that its getting Voltage. In the trunk, just behind the rear seat, a little to the passenger side, under the floor covering is a 4" round metal access cover for the fuel gauge. There are 4 wires going into it. 2 yellow wires, 1 black and 1 green. The black and 1 yellow wire are for the pump, the 2 yellow wires are identical so you will need probe thru the insulation on them and check which one has 12 Volts from it to the black wire. The 12Volts should last 2-5 sec when you turn on the key. If no Voltage on either Yellow wire, check fuses and then relay like other folks have said. To find relay remove lower plastic panel under sterring wheel ( I think it was 2 sceews, then remove metal bracing-2 or 3 10mm bolts and another small brace 2 screws as I recall. This helps to see back to the left of steering wheel colume the large relay back in there. Mine was light blue with white numbers. Its actually 2 relays in one and not easy to check if your not an electronic tech as I am.

Hey guys... Been a while since i've been back. Update... One really hot day it quit working, so i took the relay out and put it in the fridge for a while (oh, i checked for voltage at the pump and had nothing). so it cooled off and put it back in and started right up. i have a friend that works at an acura dealer so i got a brand new one for 40 bucks. cant beat that, considering it should have sold for 95 plus tax. f that! lol. just shows you the rediculous markup on this garbage.
but at any rate, car is working fine now as of a few weeks ago. glad i found this site or i would have changed the pump and had the same problem. thanks a lot guys!
