Hard to start

A couple years ago my Vig was sometimes difficult to start after sitting for an hour or so after driving. Would not start until I sat for maybe 15 minutes and tried again. Asked Vigor Service to fix it so they did a $100 scan and something else that did not cost anything and the car has been working fine since.

Until this morning when shopping(in and out of the car after a short freeway run) until after the last stop it would not start until it sat for a few minutes after trying to start it. Tried to start it three or four times but as before it took about 15 minutes before it started.

It was hesitant to start again after I got home and I think it is idling slower than normal.

Anyone have a guess what Vigor Service adjusted before and what I can adjust myself? Idle adjusted richer or whatever? Thanks for the help. Dale

Dale,
For faster response to Vigor specific questions, visit us at the acuravigorclub.com and join the yahoo club/group. We have daily activity there and problems like these we eat for breakfast.

The problem that you're having is a faulty MAIN RELAY. The main relay controls fuel delivery to the engine and energizes the fuel pump in the trunk. Symptoms of a faulty main relay is difficulty starting even though the starter turns and turns the engine. Usually during the mornings when the sun is out and heating the cabin. After a drive, engine refuses to start again until it's sat for 15-30 minutes to cool off.

A few easy ways to test would be to listen to the fuel pump energize. You'll hear it with the seat belt buckled, and the door closed, windows down. Turn the key to the ON possition without cranking, and you should hear the pump activate for 2 seconds. Replacing the main relay takes 15 minutes for someone that knows what they're doing, but may be as long as several hours to someone who doesn't.

To answer your questions regarding the scanner, there is no port on a Vigor for a scanner tool. There is a port to read the trouble codes stored in the ECU memory, but since the Vigor is not an OBD type vehicle, the codes need to be read and translated. I don't know what the dealer did, but it's possible that it was by chance that by bringing it in, solved the problem for a little while.

Thanks for the info Shawn.

I have tried to join your group a number of times over the years and my request just sits there for a few days without any action and I finally give up.

Anyway my Vig is working fine again. Maybe I carelessly pushed on the accelerator as I tried to start it, so I am more careful not to do that. For sure a couple years ago before I took the Vig into the dealer it did not start immediately many times.
