Vigor head bolt
I have a 94 Vigor that I need to change the head on. Pretty much everywhere I've read states that you shouldn't reuse cylinder head bolts because of bolt stretch. Ok, so I called Acura trying to order a set of head bolts and they said I'm looking at ~$15 for the 11 bolts and ~$18 for the longer bolt. Thats about ~$200 for the kit.
I was wondering if it was possible that I could cross reference my bolt specs with another vehicles (possible f/h/k?) and pick up the bolt/stud kit for that. The only specs i was able to get were: 11 bolts - 12 x 146mm 1 bolt - 12 x 182mm Now, I'm assuming that those numbers are the socket size and the bolt length respectively. I'm thinking i'd also need to know the thread pitch for those (and the other) bolts/studs as well, but i'm hoping Honda uses the same pitch for all their head bolts. If anyone can give me some help or insight, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

lol....well, i need some head bolts. but, if i can cross reference another vehicle's head bolt pattern with mine, then i will try and pick up some studs from that vehicle. i contacted ARP a while ago inquiring about some custom head studs, and the guy i spoke with said that i would be looking at about $800-1k. WAY too much.

i called NAPA and autozone and neither place has them. My only option so far has been Acura.
Why would it not be a good idea to compare bolt specs with another vehicle? I would figure that if the other bolt has the completely same bolt specs as my vehicle, then what would be the problem? |

The "problem" would be the uncertainty of having ALL the specs. You'd certainly be able to get diameter, length, and thread pitch. You'd probably be able to determine tensile strength requirements closely enough. Vigs don't use "Torque-To-Yield" head bolts, so you're home free on that one.
But what are you overlooking? That's the thing that always comes back to bite you in the butt. Are they made of some special alloy that's resistant to electrolysis? Or that has a certain amount of elasticity? Are they... who knows! If you confine your search to Honda/Acura equivalents, you MIGHT be okay. But why chance it on such a critical application! We're not talking about a bolt for an alternator bracket. It's a critical component. |

I understand what you are saying. I was planning on only keeping my search to Honda/Acura vehicles. I have no problem with going to Acura and picking up the head bolts from them.
My main issue is with the head studs. I refuse to pay ~$1k for a set of custom head studs from ARP. If I can find a vehicle from Honda that uses the same bolts specs, then i would think i'd be in the clear. If things go well, i'm planning on being boosted this summer, so head studs would definately be better for the Vig, but again....i'm not paying that much for a set of custom...at least not now. Hell, if all else fails, i guess i'll have no choice but to boost on OEM head bolts. |
