Acura to add diesel models by 2010

Honda has already announced plans to introduce a new 2.2L four cylinder clean diesel in the US market in 2009, likely in the Accord. Honda CEO Takeo Fukui also discussed a diesel V-6 in an interview last December in Automotive News. It now looks like one or both of the engines will turn up in the Acura lineup, at least in Japan, by 2010. If the four-cylinder proves popular in the Accord it seems probable that we will also see diesel Acura models here as well. A likely candidate would be the next generation RL with a diesel V-6. That combination would pit it directly against the German rivals like the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5-Series which will both have six-cylinder diesels by then.

It's about time... they have the 2.2 diesel in Europe for some time already... in the Euro Accord (TSX) and the Civic... and maybe even other models... not sure.

They will be able to make alot of power out of the diesel motor, and it should be real efficient.

FYI the engine already exist for some years and is in use here...

140hp
about 250 lbs/ft of torque

36 mpg city
55 mpg highway

with less emission than the 1.8 l in the current Civic

it also has a faster 0-60 on the civic than the 1.8 (not a big one though)
8.6 instead of 8.9

One, they are an expensive option. Two, they cost a lot more to maintain than gas. Three, breakdowns are usually due to poor maintenance. Four, burning diesel equals carbon emissions.

Here it's a 2000 euro option ($2600). Meaning you add 10% on the price of the car... it's not that bad I think... especially if you do a lot of mileage you will save when you will fill it.
Not sure that they cost more to maintain... at least not now.
Carbon emission is lower than gas now.

In the states, diesel fuel is more expensive than unleaded. Only positive is on the east coast, emissions inspections are not required. But, as Dave said, diesels emit far more particulate matter than gasoline engines.

I'm not a fan of diesels - never have been, probably never will be either.

As the other Dave said... they don't emit more particule anymore

And even if the diesel is more expensive, you do more mpg. So in the end you pay less.

Just because you don't see a black cloud under acceleration out of the exhaust, doesn't mean the particulate isn't there.

I'm an old diesel mechanic, and the hype doesn't faze me.

Oh, and biodiesel is a joke. You lose +/- 20 to 40% efficiency with that type of fuel, depending on the engine.

Oh, and I had two diesel pickups when I was needing that type of vehicle, and swore never, ever to own another passenger vehicle powered by diesel ever again.

When you buy a car in Europe they need to provide information about the emissions. And the emission for a Civic...

1.8 petrol : 155 g/km
2.2 diesel : 135 g/km

I rest my case

You still won't get me to buy a diesel. I pumped and burned too many thousands of gallons of diesel when I was farming to ever want anything to do with them again.
