Apple talking to labels about unlimited music
Hmmmm $100.00 for unlimited music access - just might work!

I'm assuming they mean unlimited access, not unlimited downloads. Otherwise, I can't see that possibly working, labels would lose waaayyyy too much money.

$100 is what consumers want, not what Apple and the music industry are willing to give it out for. I think a more realistic premium would be in the $300 per device or a monthly subscription model.

I'm still an holdout. I prefer Amazon MP3. Absolutely NO DRM. Tried to make a ringtone out of a song my daughter had bought off iTunes and what a damn pain!!

Great. What I meant was that it might be like Napster or something, where you pay a certain amount to be able to stream music on a computer (or maybe a wifi device like an iphone or something), but you have to pay to actually download the song, which I believe is how Napster does it now. I just can't see labels ever possibly agreeing to this when you think about it this way: Mechanical royalties (what songwriters get paid from selling songs) are usually about 8 cents. So basically, if someone pays Apple $100 for unlimited downloads, after downloading 1200 songs, ALL of that $100 has been paid to songwriters by means of mech. royalties. At that point, Apple makes NO money on that because they're paying it all out. And if stuff like Kazaa or Bittorrent is any indication, people with unlimited download access won't just be downloading a few songs a month, they're going to be downloading whatever they want, just because they can. I just don't see it happening. Not as described, anyway. |
