There’s been some talk of Electronic Arts’ upcoming new iteration in the long-running Need for Speed series, but nothing substantial. That changes today with EA’s official announcement of Need for Speed: Undercover, providing new details about the street racer, as well as a release date.

Like EA CEO John Riccitiello revealed back in June, the concept of Need for Speed: ProStreet was “not good,” so the team decided to go back to the roots with the 2008 installment. As such, Undercover’s gameplay will be similar to that of Most Wanted, one of the more memorable Need for Speed titles, and will include the series’ renowned cop chases and highway battles, plus a story-driven approach.

Said Bill Harrison, Need for Speed Undercover Executive Producer:

“Need for Speed Undercover features a deep and engaging story of spectacular Hollywood-style live-action that will transport players into the fictional world of the Tri-City Bay Area. Working with talent the caliber of Maggie Q allows us to deliver an unparalleled level of storytelling that will keep players engaged in between 180-mile an hour races.”

Engaged, we believe, they will be, yes. In addition to keeping players’ eyes on the screen, Maggie Q will guide players as they go undercover, take on dangerous tasks, and compete in races so as to infiltrate and bring a “ruthless international crime syndicate” to its knees.

Unsurprisingly, Maggie Q is a racing fan and believes Undercover won’t disappoint:

“I’ve always been a fan of racing games and working on Need for Speed Undercover was an amazing experience. I was so impressed by the scope and quality of the overall production that goes into a videogame these days. It was like any other day on a Hollywood set; I felt right at home. The Black Box team is doing tremendous work here and I can’t wait to see the final game.”

Need for Speed: Undercover is being developed by EA’s Black Box and is slated for release in North America on November 18 and Europe on November 21.

Gotta admit, I enjoyed Project Gotham 1 almost exclusively because you could race through downtown Chicago. Different experience when you recognize what you see on the TV.

i went back and played carbon for a few nights last week. i got hooked again. i'll definitely get this one when it comes out.

I wish I still had a copy of Need for Speed Hot Pursuit II.

Wonder if the regular xbox game would work on my 360?

Yeah, 360 is backward compatible with original xbox games. Tried out the original Forza out a couple nights ago.

I'll probably be disappointed, as the graphics since then are leaps and bounds ahead. Might still pick it up though. Probably get it at gamestop for $10

When I played Forza, the graphics seemed grainy compared to the second. It was kinda weird because I thought the first forza graphics were great when I played it on the original xbox.

I installed NFS: Hot Pursuit on my desktop current, which looked awesome back in teh day. I couldn't even play it, it looked so terrible hahahaha

Had to look up Maggie Q. Well, she's certainly hot.

I'm in for updates! Maybe I should rent Carbon in the meantime.

But, PS3 will have Wipeout HD soon and Motorstorm II pretty soon, too. Ugh...

Looks sick, but I wish it just looked more real, no car is going to stay shiny after 20 miles of what they do in the game, or still drive after smacking into walls.
