I'm interested in buying a second generation Acura CL Type-S. Not sure which year or automatic or manual. Which trim was/is plagued with the transmission issues?

Potentially, any 01-03 CL model. The 6 speed M/T in the CL was offered in the 2003 model year only.

If you see a vehicle with an A/T that you really like, email me with the VIN to hondacuraworld@aol.com , and I'll check the car's history

damn! I'm stuck with A/T since I can't drive stick. So even if the transmission issue on a '01 to '03 A/T model was fixed twice it still doesn't guarantee that I won't run into the same issue, correct?

It depends on who did the repair, and what was done. The issue comes from a lack of lubrication on the transmission mainshaft. Acura reman transmissions are corrected internally for this issue. However, that's not to say that the potential isn't there even then for any future concerns. A lot of it is predicated on the way you drive, or the way the person who owned the car, drove.....and that's information that most likely you won't ever know.

It's like anything, really. If you beat on it hard enough, it'll break. While the engines can generally withstand many years of abuse, the transmission won't.

Avoid the problem completely and LEARN how to drive a standard transmission. Its more fun and serves as a theft deterrent too!
