Clutch for My 1997 NSX

I think my 1997 NSX may need a new clutch soon. It has 31,000 miles. Any one out there have advice?

I found prices on the Internet that are discounted about 25% from a Florida Acura dealer.

What have others paid for a clutch replacement?

I heard that NSX flywheels cannot be resurfaced; they must be replaced.

I don’t have an NSX, so excuse me for my ignorance on the subject, but 31,000 seems a little quick for a clutch change.

I know that I’ve burned thru a few clutches on other cars, pretty fast, so I suppose it’s not impossible, but even still it seems a little early.

Out of curiosity, what makes you think your clutch needs replacing? Is it slipping? Is 3X,XXX miles a common replacement interval?

Just wondering in case I decide to buy one for myself.

I purchased my 1995 NSX at 26K miles. At over 35K miles, I began experiencing clutch problems, particularly on a trip up through the Grapevine on the way to Las Vegas. Very shortly, I had it replaced with a Dali Streetclutch with lightened flywheel, and while I was already in there, I replaced the transmission with NSX-R short gears and a 4.55 R&P. Overall, it wasn't cheap. With all the parts and labor, I ended up spending around $5K. However, my enjoyment during general driving has increased substantially.

It is not uncommon for NSXs to need to new clutchs around 40K miles. When my old one was taken out, it was pretty chewed up and pitted. I highly douobt I did that in 7K miles, so the previous owner may have been pretty bad on it.

If you plan on going with an OEM clutch, join the NSXCA (if you already haven't), and you'll be able to get similar prices at an actual Acura Parts Department. Otherwise, check with dedicated NSX vendors like ScienceofSpeed.com or DaliRacing.com.

I would recommend replacing it with an aftermarket clutch. I would expect labor to cost over $1K.
