Pre-1997 NSXs Faster?
Two people at the Acura dealer told me that the earlier NSXs from 1991 to 1996 with 270 hp are faster in acceleration than the 290 hp 1997 and up versions.
They claimed that the 6-speed had less favorable gear ratios than the 5-speed version. One fellow said he had watched several races between stock NSXs and the 270 hp versions always won in 0-60 mph and the quarter mile. Has anyone else heard this? Thanks, - Russ in Santa Barbara |

What he says he "saw" may have indeed been true. However, I might attribute that to driving ability, rather than the cars themselves. The 290 HP 1997+ NSXs have consistently achieved better 0 - 60 MPH times than the 5 speed 270 HPs cars in controlled situations (i.e. magazine tests).

I agree. All things being equal, the 97+ NSX stock for stock is quite a bit faster than the 91-94 NSX and especially faster than the 95-96 NSX-T which is often described as the slowest of them all (Although it is not slow by any means). Most believe that the 6-Speed trans is actually the best of them all. The NSX-R (JDM Short gears and 4.235 Ring and Pinion) being the 2nd, and the stock USDM 5-Speed being the last. I personally have a 92 with the NSX-R gears and IMHO I could never out accelerate a 97+ in good working condition with everything else but my gears being stock. Anyway, Like Fury mentioned, the 97+ is quicker and at least a good solid 0.5-0.7 seconds faster in both 0-60 and 1/4 mile.
