20 minutes Idle bad for an engine? High rpms due to a missed gear, what are results?
So I was with a girl and.. well my RSX-S was idle for say 20 minutes before I decided to turn the car off.. Just wondering if this is bad for the engine or what cause today I found myself taking a nap in my car on lunch due to a late night and its soo hot outside I had to run the A/C... so bottom line, an idle engine with A/C going, this bad? What does it do?
Also, missing a gear, I am still new with racing so I went from I think 3rd to 2nd or maybe if I went from 4th to 1st... and the rpms just skyrocket extremely fast, I slam the clutch back in.. what kind of effect does this have on the engine? Keep in mind this is very rare, it has happened 2 times, once by me and once by a friend who wasnt used to the car. |

I wouldn't think idling the car would be a problem. As long as the temp stays steady I can't see a problem. BUT, normally, a car is moving and that helps bring more air to the radiator.
Missing a gear? You'd probably know if something was wrong by now but I'll let someone else step in here.

20minutes on idle shouldn't be that bad. i used to leave my car on for 10minutes. maybe a little longer. the only thing that you have to think about is what chuck said above. there's not much airflow going through the engine.
shifting like that shouldn't be a problem, either, as long as your car isn't chipped and you hit the clutch right away. the rpm should skyrocket because you downshifted and that you hit v-tec much faster because the lower the gear you are in the more revolutions you make. i said it's not a problem as long as your car is chipped because there is a cut-off switch on our car. whe your car hits the redline, somewhere around there you'll lose power. meaning, gas was being cut-off. if it's chipped, it takes that away and that the was is being over USED. hence, no redline. back when i used to race on the freeways, i would downshift from 6gear-4th or depending on how fast i was already going, sometimes 3rd, for faster take-off.

Doesn't matter if your car is "chipped" or not. If you downshift, the engine is going to match whatever rpm it is suppose to be. If it's suppose to be at 10,000, then that's where it's going to go and your engine is toast. I've gone from 6th to 3rd before and caught it before it reached past the red line. If you are sure you caught it before the revs got up too high, you should be fine. If you are unsure, only thing you can possibly do is a leak down test and a compression test. The rev limit only works if you accelerate and will not let you go past 8200/8400. Downshifting will let you go past that.

Willie, you're completely wrong.
As Giken said misshifting can cause major problems because it can rev your engine way past it's limits. If it feels fine you might be fine, but a compression test never hurts. Take it easy until you can shift without thinking and hit your gear every time. sidenote: I don't know what happened between my 1st and 2nd rsx, but every time I downshift now I revmatch with scary accuracy ![]()

Idling won't hurt the car. You're just burning that $4.75+/gal gas is all. As far as a mis-shifted over-rev, that can bring some serious damage to the engine. To prevent this, read this post:
