DIY - Mugen 25mm Rear Sway Bar w/ ES Bushings

This is the DIY for the 25mm Mugen rear sway bar with energy suspension polyurethane bushings.

1- The Goods:
Mugen 25mm rear sway bar

Energy Suspension polyurethane bushings:

2- Tools needed:
  • Ratchet
  • 14mm wrench
  • 12mm socket
  • 5mm allen wrench
  • Extension
  • and a glass of fresh made banana juice (The beer is after completion)

3- The Installation:
A) Start by parking the car on a flat surface and engage the e-brake.
B) Jack the car up from a center point in the rear, you can use the tow hook, or like I did, take off the lower tie bar (4 bolts) and jack the car up from there, then use jacks on each side in front of the rear wheels as pictured below.
Lower tie bar uninstalled:

Car on jack stands.

C) Take off the the (4) 12mm bolts that hold the stock bar to the chassis using the 12mm socket and the ratchet, then at each end link, using the 14mm wrench and the 5mm allen wrench, take off the nuts that hold the ends of the bar to the end link.

End of the bar shown with end link:

5mm allen wrench into the bolt and 14mm wrench around the nut (passenger side):

5mm allen wrench into the bolt and 14mm wrench around the nut (driver side):

D) Now you have officially taken out the stock 21mm rear sway bar and are ready for some comparison:
Can you tell the difference?

E) Now is the time to apply some grease inside the bushings and on the bar itself at the points where the bushings are going to be.

F) Wipe the area off from road grime and dirt where the bracket is going to go.

G) Install the Mugen 25mm rear sway bar using the energy suspension bushings and the supplied brackets and washers in the reverse way, tighten everything up, check and re-check everything and installation is complete.

Passenger side:

Driver Side:

Impressions:
It fucking corners on rails. upgrading the rear sway bar is one of the most important things in suspension.

Nice write up and pix DIY Driss! Since you already have the A-Spec suspension, how much of a difference would this make to a stockType-S suspension?

Well the biggest "street" rear sway available on the RSX is the 25mm I believe , there is a company called A-Spec which offers a 32mm with a 0.090" wall rear sway bar kit that is 3-way adjustable. I think that would be for the 100% track RSX's like Dean's for instance. Anyway 25mm is already a huge difference, especially when you add those ES hard bushings.

Thanks John, I'm certain it will make a noticeable difference.
Let me put it to you this way:
Decrease of body roll from switching to A-Spec suspension from stock suspension < Decrease of body roll from adding this sway bar and bushings to the A-Spec suspension.

great right up driss.

i totally agreed on you driss, replacing the sway bar is definitely one of the most important things to replace in the suspensions. can you feel the difference on yours? i felt mine big time! huge ass difference from stock to aftermarket.

question though. why did you have to use the allen wrench? i never used it when i took mine off.

did you clean the sway bar when you finished? cuz you prints are all over it. i cleaned mine.

Hell yeah, the difference is unreal. The car handles much better now, it corners like it's on rails dude.
The bolt that goes through the wholes on each end of the sway bar has a hole in it so you can stick the 5mm allen wrench into it to hold the bolt in place while you tighten/untighten the nut, I remember you using some kind of tool to hold the bolt from behind the sway bar, using the 5mm allen wrench is much easier and is also the way installation instructions of aftermarket sway bar manufacturers say to do it. As long as you got it done, who cares.
I took those pictures right after I was done, so yeah before I cleaned the bar. I however definitely cleaned it up. Also I just installed the rear LCA's which I'm about to post a DIY for, that'll show everything cleaned up at the end.
