Body parts fall from plane approaching JFK

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Pieces of a man's body fell from the wheel well of a South African Airways passenger plane bound for John F. Kennedy International Airport on Tuesday and landed in the yard of a suburban home, police said.

A U.S. customs inspector discovered the rest of the man's body at 7:30 a.m. (1130 GMT) after Flight 203 landed in New York from Johannesburg, South Africa, said a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees area airports.

A South African Airways spokeswoman said it appeared to have been a stowaway attempt. She said the plane had stopped in Dakar, Senegal, on its way to New York.

The pilot reported feeling vibrations at takeoff but conducted a check and found nothing amiss, said Nassau County, New York, police detective Kevin Smith.

During the flight, Smith said the pilot felt more "vibrating sensations and heard pounding, but nothing appeared wrong with the plane."

The body parts, which included the right leg, part of the spine and a hip, struck a garage roof of the home in South Floral Park, New York, before landing in the backyard, police said.

I think most people who stow away in wheel wells on airplanes don't realize it gets extremely cold at the altitudes planes fly at. Either that or they are so very desperate. I wouldn't be surprised that the guy's body froze to the point of becoming brittle and with all the moving hydraulics of the landing gear, probably shattered his body into pieces.

Very gross.

Senegal is where my sponsored child, Ndongo, lives. Sure hope this wasn't one of his relatives.

This is actually very common. Well, the stowing away in the wheel well. There are quite a few that have made the torturous journer with almost no oxygen and extreamely cold temperatures. This just encourages more. I still do not understand why they do not just put a camera or a heat sensor in the wheel well to detect these people.

If the body parts were frozen, it would be pretty easy...no mess.

Wow...

How desperate are they?

And how the heck do they manage to get in there undetected?

From the report I saw on this they do it at night and hide next to the runway. As a plane headed for the US goes by taxing they run out and hop on. These airports do not have the security of the USA ones, so it is much easier. I even saw an interview with a guy that survived. He said he lost conciousness, but woke up right before the landing gear opened.

Remember Airplain 2 where they had that shocking system for the wheel wells!

I don't care how desperate you have to be, there's gotta be common sense in people to realize if you climb into the comparment of a plane, the jets are gonna suck you in a kill you.

That's no way to get ahead*

*haf might be the only one who actually gets this.
