Interesting. I served the US in the Army for 20 years and serve as a public servant now, a few years shy of 20 more years. I believed in making a difference then, in the army, and now, in government service. I'm glad I live here, glad I was born here, and glad I had the opportunities others before me made sure I had.
This freedom we talk about here in the US, though, gives me a right to say I tend toward item #2. There are a lot of things I'm ashamed of. And even having said that, if war came to these shores, I'd be there doing what I could. (of course, I suppose that's how we've been "raised" here in the US...well, mostly)

My biggest problem with that 2nd article is that there is a serious difference (IMHO) between blind nationalism and being taught to appreciate what you have, and he doesn't seem to think there is a distinction between the two. While I'll be the first to admit that there's plenty wrong with American politics and whatnot, I don't see why a day like the 4th can't be viewed like thanksgiving or something, like a chance to appreciate what we've got in this country.
Like I said, I'm no flag-waving team-america junkie, but I think a lot of the criticism of patriotism in general is pretty weak. That's like saying we shouldn't be proud to drive Acuras because occasionally they break down. ![]()

Of course not. That was not my assertion nor do I believe that was the conclusion in the 2nd article.
But you must realize how hypocritical we (our gov't. & even more so our citizenry) are for proclaiming us to be 'The greatest country in the world.' The United States is not & will never again be even a great country unless we humble ourselves & work to resolve the immense problems we face as a nation. The 'patriotism' on display in this country too often ignores the delinquencies we show in following what this country was founded on. (Not to mention the 'patriotism' espoused by our gov't. after September 11th, which was nothing short of Totalitarianism.) Regardless, there is no such thing as 'The greatest country in the world.' Many nations on this planet are great for various reasons but not one is without faults. This proclamation is nothing short of arrogant & ignorant nation worship which has no place in the global 21st century.

Having said that, for all of our faults, there is still more right with America than wrong with America (to paraphrase a former president). And for all of our faults, we are not the only nation who suffers from shortcomings. Certainly, we are not the only nation who suffers from Nationalism; I'd argue the Nationalism exhibited here is not as bad as that exhibited in some other western nations. And there is nothing wrong with any nation and its citizens believing they are the Greatest Nation in the World. It's how you carry yourself in that belief that distinguishes whether or not other nations will agree with you.
