XP is an operating system with serious legs

XP versus Vista . . . . part 2,312

Keep XP fresh until Windows 7 arrives - WindowsSecrets.com

Quote:

Microsoft may not have planned it this way, but XP could end up rivaling NT and 2000 as the version of Windows with the longest lifespan. According to recent news reports, Dell, Lenovo, and other computer manufacturers will continue to sell new PCs running Windows XP well past Microsoft's June 30 cutoff date.

PC vendors will do so by invoking a downgrade plan that lets them ship a system with Windows XP installed as long as the customer is also paying for an upgrade to Vista Business or Ultimate editions, either of which is included in each box.

Of course, computer manufacturers aren't the only ones looking for ways to extend XP's usefulness. One pundit has predicted that Microsoft itself is going to fast-track Windows 7 to get customers to leapfrog over the unpopular Vista and go directly from XP to the next version. In fact, according to the technology site Ars Technica, one major American corporation, General Motors, is considering doing just that.
Just an fyi . . .

Yeah, you better hide. Though it is reported Vista is unpopular and though my own personal experience with it has been less than satisfying, Calimike will come in here and kick your ass, John!

I'll follow up my original post with . . .
Gates: Windows 7 will "take less memory, be more efficient"
Quote:
It can be argued that Microsoft's main focus with Windows Vista was security. While sceptics try to claim that there has not been much improvement, Vista does appear to be Microsoft's most secure OS to date.

Nevertheless, it's far from perfect, and not only on the security front. While many tests show that Vista outperforms XP on some high-end computers, the average computer system does not run Windows Vista as well as it does Windows XP. This will of course change as the average computer becomes more powerful and as Microsoft tweaks the operating system (SP1 already offers some help), but the fact of the matter is that Vista is recognized as a slow operating system.

Many have therefore turned their hopes to Windows 7. Maybe, just maybe, Microsoft will not increase the minimum requirements as it did from Windows XP to Windows Vista. Considering that Microsoft hopes to get Windows 7 out the door faster than it did with Vista (which came out six years after XP, compared to the typical three) this is entirely possible, and Bill Gates has all but confirmed that Windows 7 will focus on performance improvements:

"We're hard at work, I would say, on the next version, which we call Windows 7. I'm very excited about the work being done there. The ability to be lower power, take less memory, be more efficient, and have lots more connections up to the mobile phone, so those scenarios connect up well to make it a great platform for the best gaming that can be done, to connect up to the thing being done out on the Internet, so that, for example, if you have two personal computers, that your files automatically are synchronized between them, and so you don't have a lot of work to move that data back and forth."

One must remember though: Windows 7 is still in the development stage and Bill Gates touched upon a lot more than just performance improvements for Windows in his high-hopes speech at the Windows Digital Lifestyle Consortium in Japan.

Windows 7 will undoubtedly have problems, but for some reason (crazy optimism? lack of sleep?) I have much higher expectations for this release than I did for Vista. That might be because Steve Sinofsky, who previously headed up the Office 2007 project, is in charge.

1. Be worried because Office 2007 is a cluster fuck and half. By far the worst Office suite that has ever been released. I will grant that it is designed to work in a Vista environment, and requires a learning curve to be used to its full extent.

2. What has been said that Windows 7 won't have much the same interface that Vista now has? What I have read and have been told is this will share much the same platform with Vista, and will only be a Vista upgrade.

Rather than post the article, here is the link

Reality check: what we know (and don't) about Windows 7

They are a fairly reliable source who are well respected in the industry.

Microsoft will do what Microsoft thinks will make them the most money. Vista has not been what they envisioned - as far as acceptance and $$$$ for the bottom line.

John, the fact remains that the architecture of the OS will remain essentially the same as Vista.

Get used to it or you will be deeply disappointed.

I honestly believe that this is the best OS I've used since Dos 6.

If you've downloading the monthly patches - not much. I downloaded and installed the SP# on one system (it took about 25 minutes to download and install - from a full T-1 line) while I just did the incremental patches on another. Result - I saw no difference, so I
