I should add, that Top Gear C6 review is from this past Sunday's episode....last of the season for a few months.
Anyway, I'm not surprised by it at all. Their review of American cars in the UK is very poor. They really do like the Holden Monaro and the Vette in terms of fun to drive....however, they HATE HATE HATE the build quality and this is frankly the biggest thing that sets apart US and UK consumers in their tastes. Over there, it's not about the engine so much...it's the total package. Here, this only applies to a few select manufacterers. I mean don't get me wrong, the Brits make fun of Rover ALL the time for being crappy, unreliable, and just abosolutely horrendous as a figure of British motoring...it's not limited to American cars by any means....but still, their viewpoint remains. Heck, in the same episode, they test drove an X3 and said it was crap...so crap they didn't bother to pull it out of it ditch it got stuck off roading so many times. |

Its not old fashioned at all. Also the 405 horse zo6 ran a 12.2 in the quarter but this new 400 horse Vette has been clocked at 12.5 and 12.7 by r@t couldn’t beat an NSX which runs about 13.4 by the same magazines here (sources R&T and C&D)? I know an NSX can run a low 13 high 12 and they are fantastic car but a 400 horse Vette is faster in the quarter stock for stock. It’s just strange that every car magazine here has the Vette running that much faster. The corvette is also one of the best handling cars I have ever ridden in. The z06 which also uses a traverse leaf can pull nearly 1 g and is rated one of the best handling cars in the world by many other magazines. Would I own a Vette...maybe a used z06 but otherwise no. I just think that every time Top Gear reviews a non British car they are rather snobbish. If it’s Japanese "it doesn’t have heritage or soul like a British car" if it’s American it’s fat and ungainly. Truth be told there are very few British cars I would want to own. Lotus Esprit is a wonderful looking car, on of my favorites ever, but they have serious reliability problems at 10,000+ miles. The Aston is an awesome looking car but the Ferrari does everything better and is also more reliable. Jaguar is not nearly the quality or performance of its Japanese and German counterparts. Old British roadsters that top gear touts so much are underpowered, rust prone, unreliable, electrical nightmares. Top gear while loving the ford GT always point to the British heritage of the original gt40 they can never say good job to Japan/America company, they always have to point to a British influence. They are also rather inaccurate about some of their info. They say the GT uses the ford lightning engine. If fact it uses a unique block casting with extra material for bracing in the cast, special heads, different pistons, different supercharger, different cams, and different intake. I like top gear and I’m sure the above statements will get me flamed a bit. They are humorous and superior to car shows we have here but they are not impartial at all. A Japanese sport sedan is far superior to a British one in build quality, satisfaction and performance. The german cars beat them in everything also. The Corvette is superior to any British sports car of the same price range. http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....ber=2&preview= http://www.caranddriver.com/article....&page_number=1 Last edited by 4everhonda : 08-03-04 at 09:48 PM. |

Yes top gear loves to claim the Brits are the best but they do acknowledge what is better...especially in the realm of what they're absolutely known for - supercars - that's their ticket to fame. They've driven them all when most tv shows can only dream about taking pics of one. However, there's another hurdle you're missing....their humor and how they use it to claim the Brits are the best - they're not always serious
A lot of this isn't translated obviously b/c that showed isn't "geared" (I crack myself up ) for US viewers. Many shows I watch I'm just 'ing the entire time b/c they touch on so many things "British" and mock themselves for it. It's hard to pickup sometimes though.Regardless when you say: Quote:
This is the age old debate really of US vs. foreign cars really....but I'm convinced still that the US has a long way to go after being able to see and drive cars from Europe and Japan.... |

Vietnamese suspension hehe.
During one of the SLR clip, they mentioned how Beckham should stop looking at cars and focus instead on practicing penalty shots before 2006. I laughed my ass off. ![]() Last edited by dkrift : 08-07-04 at 02:30 AM. |
