Brake Assembly TSB?

Hey folks,

A few of you may remember a while back I mentioned I had this really weird "click" or "pop" noise coming from the brake assembly whenever I would depress the pedal - this was something I could feel as a pop in the pedal as well. Didn't seem to affect the performance of the brakes but annoying as hell.

Anyhow, I was brushed off a number of times by the service folks saying either "they couldn't duplicate/detect" (which I'm finding to be the code for "we have no idea or are too lazy to figure out what it is"), or "this is a normal sound", which was riddiculous. Today I called them again to get them to look at it, in addition to a few other things they are taking care of.

The lady on the other line immediately said "Oh, there is a TSB on this". In brief: If a customer complains of soft pedal feel or any noise from the brake assembly when braking, there may be a problem with the brake booster master cylinder. If I remember correctly, she said this affects certain 03 and 04 EL's with VINs above a certain number. She said that the TSB did not state anything specific beyond that, nor did it describe the resolution, but it does instruct the dealer to phone Honda Canada for further instructions.

Anyhow, I am really hoping that whatever is done will finally resolve my problem, but either way - thought I'd pass on this info to you guys should you experience any related issues. Always good to come armed with TSB info for these situations.

Service appt next Monday; will report back anything else I find out about this.

Hey folks,

Better late than never, but anyways... a brief update on this here. Brought it in, and had it checked out (along with some other things) and, as fate would have it, everything apparently checked out ok with the brake booster master cylinder. So my brake pedal clicking problem goes unresolved for yet another day.

I did however get further confirmation that the TSB I first mentioned does exist; so keep that one in your back pocket in case you need it!

That wasn't the interesting part of the service. I will get into that in another thread:

New transmission

Talking fixed the problem a day ago.

As I just told Win,

I just bought a 2001 Acura EL and i got the exact same click / pop noise while braking.

they couldn't figure it out at first, I just bought this car a week ago, had the mechanic drive around a bit.

Anyways, they fixed it, now it's GONE hopefully if any of you get this same problem you read my post and are able to fix it too.

The mechanic wrote on the diagnostic sheet that he ALSO thought it was the brake booster cylinder, BUT he looked and found that it was actually the BRAKE PEDAL ASSEMBLY.

The part cost me $125CDN, and it was an hour of labour to install, luckily for me, I really complained about the click/pop right after buying my car, the dealer paid half so i pretty much just paid part, free labour

But anyways, I thought i'd share my story, it sounds a looot like my problem and getting them to check the brake pedal assembly would help.

It sure was annoying while it still happened.

I still have the same problem with mine, when I brought it in the guy made up some explaination saying that it was switch or something in the brake peddle. I had no idea what he was talking about

It's the brake pedal assembly and/or the brake light switch.

Hi,

I got mine fixed and it sounds identical.
there were 2 parts making the noise.

1. the brake pedal assembly (only covered under the 60,000/3 yr warranty),
and

2. the brake light switch (also in the pedal), which is covered under the 5 yr warranty.

This isn't the same noise you get when u lightly touches the brake right?
I think that's the shift interlock sound...Even tho everytime i step on the brake, and i can hear this tiny click sound....

Do i have to stand outside the car to hear this?

Damn, I got a 2003 and have the same problem... I don't hear any sound, but I can feel a pop when I release the brake... And it doesn't always happen... How am I suppose to tell them?

What dealer do you guys bring your car to? I need to goto the same dealer.. so they know what I am talking about!

Anyone have problems with their FUEL GAUGES by the way? My gauges screw... every once it a while it will fall th Empty and come back up after 5 minutes or so.. Have my Sensor changed 3 times.. Didn't help.. and finally Acura tell me there is a problem with all ELs and ask me to wait for an answer... That was 6 months ago!

No, it is not really a noise... Some time you can hear it.. most you can't.. You just feel it on your leg... as you release your brake.. you feel a POP or somethings like some one TAB on your brake panel... Just like you try to push a switch using your leg..

The funny part is you can't feel it if the car standing still. It have to be moving.. When you try to stop.. you push the panel.. and if you release the panel a little before the car come to a full stop, you will feel it...

The problems for mine is, it happen in the summer alot... now, it only happen once in a while... First I was thinking my Brake is worning out... I planing to do a brake job soon anyway... until I see this post...

I can't even bring it in, because I just drove around with my car... 40 minutes drive.. and I only feel it 2... may be 3X ... in the course of 40 minutes city driving. Damn... If it happen all the time, I can bring it in...

I have the same problem too.
I think it can be something with the brake boosters or actual brake assembly itself. Acura promised to change my boosters for me but they still havn't done so.

Hey clemento (sorry to pipe in here so late on this) - this is exactly the noise (and under the same conditions) I have been experiencing as well, and it really is bothersome. I notice it does not occur much at all in cold weather, but as soon as it gets warmer, and especially in the summer, you can definitely feel it.

When I took my car in to Silverhill Acura they just poo-poohed the whole thing, made some really lame excuse. Typical service-level for these guys. At NorthWest, they actually did take it out for a drive and felt it; I insisted it was the brake pedal assembly, but they were convinced it was related to the brake-booster TSB, so they changed the related part. Of course, it did not do anything, but they thought it did, because of another interesting characteristic of the problem - whenever the car has been up on the hoist, the break "pop" will go away for the first hour or so of driving, but then comes back in full force shortly thereafter.

Anyhow, I did not get a chance to get back to NorthWest to have them continue their work on this before the winter, so it looks like I will have to try this again in the summer. I really wish there was some sort of understanding from service folks that there are indeed customers these days who really do know what they are talking about! I know this prob could have been solved a LONG time ago.

Did you ever get yours checked out and/or dealt with?

brake assembly guys, I'm about 99.9% sure that the master cylinder has nothing to do with the pop. As to why it happens moreso when it's hot rather than cold is a mystery to me, I've had problems related to 'weather' as well, and sometimes... well most of the time the fact that the problems were related to the outside temperature made absolutely zero sense... maybe the colder temperature causes certain parts (the affected part in this case) to sieze up or tighten up if you will, whereas the warmer summer temperatures allow the assembly to loosen and creates more succeptability to clicking or popping... what do you think?

I'm sure it has something to do with something in the assembly expanding/contracting; when the weather is warmer it changes enough to cause a linkage to be a bit loose, causing the "pop". The challenge in all of this, is to get a service person who is keen enough to really investigate this, rather than brush it off as inconsequential, or pin it on other things without considering or taking seriously all the customer's observations. Damn service people can't seem to think out of the box once in a while, hence; I've been fighting this every service appointment since we first bought the car in '03!

Starting to give up hope that it will ever be resolved - in warranty. Once you're out, I'm sure the service folks are more than eager to rip things apart and replace whatever parts you want... and charge you for it, too.
