Car 1: 2000 Acura 1.6EL
difference in gas....

Hey boysss

i was looking through some magazine a while back... and it has a lil feature on 1.6 el's and said something bout putting premium gas in the tank... it said it'd make a lil diffference in the cars performance... my dad thinks cause my car is the premium package it means i should put high octane gas... so the question is.. is it doing anything putting this higher stuff in? thanx for the hhelps in advance..

Simply put, no. Premium package has nothing to do with high octane gas. It's simply some interior options and maybe some outside trim.

The D16/D17 is not tuned to run high octane gasoline and you will not see a benefit as such. Save your money for other things

use the octane level specified in the owner's manual... which for the case for 1.6 and 1.7 should both be regular

Just use regular, i already tested this theory by putting premium in...I did this for a few weeks to see any difference. The car actually became less noisy. Also i felt a bit more pep out of it in the higher revs...but it may have just been me. All in all, not worth it.

High octane gas means it is harder to burn. It is used in engines with higher compression to prevent detonation or pre ignition where the engine has higher heat and compression. It is harder to burn so it does not pre-ignite before the plugs fire it up. So if you have a turbo or super charger, then it's a good idea to use the high (I have the option of 87, 89, and 93 by me.) I regularly use the 89 rating.

Here in the Toronto area, it has been hovering around the $0.80-$0.90/L mark for regular in the last week. Premium is about $0.10 more per L.
