Car 1: Acura 2006 CSX
New Acura Owner.

Yesterday my wife and I just purchased a 2006 CSX. (Car to arrive next week.) We are new to the Acura world and are very impressed with their line of vehicles. I have a question for the more experienced owners. As expected from all new car sales, the dealers presented all extra options to purchase – such as the extended warranty packages and the “Protection packages.” We have previously owned Honda products and never found these extra purchases to be necessary. Does anyone have any opinions concerning the purchase of these extra packages?

to AcuraWorld! Congrats on your purchase.

A lot of the dealer "packages" they try to sell you can be had for cheaper elsewhere. Not all are useless, but some are. For instance, in the Canadian climate, rust proofing is a good idea, but for the most part you can get it done for cheaper elsewhere..but don't fall for those electronic rust proofing devices. Things such as paint protectant or interior fabirc protection is a waste of money. They try to convice you that they do one application of a special type of sealant or potectant and you never have to polish, wax, or apply any vinyl or leather protectant ever again. One application will never do the job of frequent cleaning and detailing. That's a fact. My dealershiup tried to sell me this, but then told me the warranty was only good for 5 years. So what will my car look after 5 years of never waxing it becaue I was told it was not necessary because of this "protectant"? If the paint looks like crap, I'm SOL because my warranty just ran out!

As for extended warranties, that's a different matter, since this is offered through Honda. For those who want peace of mind or put a lot of mileage on their car, it's not entirely a waste of money, IMO. I bought my 2006 TSX with the full extended warranty, because I will be driving it more than any previous car I have had, and for all the extra computerization and electonics in that car, which I never had in any previous car I have owned. You never know when a simple sensor will just fail, and some of those are damn expensive. I bought the warranty for stuff like that, not the engine...because I know I can depend on the engine! Also, Honda and Acura warranties are much cheaper than the warranties on most American cars, sometimes as much as 40%. Even Toyota's warranties are cheap. It's probably because you are more likely to need an extended warranty if you buy an American car than a Honda or Toyota.

Smile Thanks for the response.

Hello "Rice Boy,"

Thanks for the respone to my questions.
I truly appreciate your input.
I will discuss your responses with my wife.
She is excited to be driving her new vehicle.
For the last 11 years, she has been driving an old 1995 Van.
Still ran well - but was recently solden for the 2nd time and written off by the insurance company.
(A new Acura ?? Talk about a change for her !!!!)
Have a good weekend.
Thanks again.

I suggest that you are buying a Honda for quality and I have never needed the extra warranty. I had a few tranny problems after warranty with a 98 Accord and 02 TL, but Honda came through for me and paid for these repairs. I would say the extended warranties are not necessary.
