Car 1: 99 tl
99tl transmission/unbelievable

Hi all,

We purchased a 99tl in september 05 with 55k. We also purchased an extended 3 yr 40k premium warranty thru MBPI which cost an extra $2600. We figured we would cover all the bases just encase, since this was our 3rd acura in the family and we were awair of the tranny probs. Car was very clean and well maintained we thought this might be a keeper for the long haul.
Wife noticed slipping within 2 months, Acura replaced tranny under recall. Service writer said "this is a new trans from factory", "not a refirb".. LOL
Wish I woulda read a little deeper in the forums back then.

Anyhow, THe car has 97k on it now, roughly 40k on replacement trans and the symptoms started to begin. We both figured recall or not I'm covered. Well The dealer says nope, MBPI says the found a trans from who knows where with 77k and they will pay dealer to install it. Nothing more nothing less.
77k ????? Is this a refirb or what I ask,,,,,
Thats roughly 30k more miles than the one I have in the car now that dealer said needed replace,, lol

We have called acura usa, they say sorry,
MBPI says well you can have this tranny or apply the cost of it to an acura replacement which in the end would cost $1200

I find it freakin amazing how I am under 95k
I have a refirb acura tranny with roughly 40k
I purchased a $2500 ex warranty from dealer where purchased car, For this very reason..

And after 4 days of waiting and watching people pass the buck ,
I will be getting a trans from who knows where? Refirb? Is it even an acura tranny??? Only time will tell,,,,,,,lol\

So for all the folks out there who consider ex warranty regardless of what the fine print says......... You Will Still Get FOOKED.

Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, that has been my personal experience with extended warranties. Once in place, the company washes their hands of you, and they will fuck you over whenever possible to keep their profits on a vehicle in place.

Yeah unfortunately most aftermarket warranties are basically just scams. As for your transmisison, I'm very sorry to hear that. Most 99 TLs do not have this problem. It was when they switched to the 5-spd the next year that the problems started occuring.

If you got the transmission from Acura under the recall they are obligated to give you a New transmision. Not a refirb.

As it is right now, you're at of warranty for the amount of years the car is old. A lot of dealership however will still replace it if its under 108k miles regardless of age. So if you can, try another dealership. They have the extra hours so don't let them B.S. you saying its hours spent. Thats crap, they have plenty of time. When acura did the recall, court ordered, they did replace the transmissions (still do) and they can with a warranty on them on top of that. So if you got a new transmission at 100k and it went at 120k you should still get one free of charge do to the extended warranty on the replacement.

Get a second opinnion from another Acura Dealership if you can.

Car 1: 99 tl
Hello again,

Acura 2G, I am hearin what your sayin but we only have the 1 acura dealer around here.. Believe me, I have read and read about the tranny warranty and all the extensions but for some odd reason we keep getting the same answers...
NO NO NO.

I guess what We don't understand is that we only have 95k on a 99tl which acura replaced the transmission at 55-56k. Granted we are over on the years as far as the 7 year and so many month deal but when this was mentioned to the dealer every other time the car was takin for service we mentioned to please check the tranny . They always said it was fine . But now, Oh no it's bad, needs replaced, for doing and acting the same as when we took it in prior? Seems to me that once acura found out someone else could spring for the bill they said PI*S OFF. People on this and other froums have had mutiple swap outs under or well over the covered millage and years.

It seems to us that we are being thrown aside because of the non-acura extended warranty. I see acuras stance, that if a owner has a policy that will pay for the same parts and labor let them pay for it.

Now the service guy at acura seems hesitant that we would even consider authorizing this warranty company to put a tranny with 77k into a car that has a "new" or refirb tranny that is on 40k old. They told my wife that he hate to see us loose faith in the car, which I am pretty close to doing. Look we bought this car not to mod and race, or beat the crap out of. We purchased it because our last 2 legends had 177k and 144k, without and major probs and were still very drivable cars.... Research showed me that yes, some cases of tranny probs (prompting us to spend the extra dough for the ex warranty).

We were under the assumption that if serviced and taken care of this TL would be in the family for may years, and possibly our daughters first car, she's only 8. LOL. But you know what I mean.

When you or others have had to deal with the tranny-dealer issue was there a secret to your success? We have been very polite, non demanding and so on. We have gotten the run around on so many other things in life that it just seems to be the norm.

Anyhow we drove past dealer last night and our baby was sittin outside all alone. When we took it it for oil change and check-up we both figured hey, if the tranny is shot big deal we r covered. 1 week later, no car, no help, except from you guy's. It's kinda like venting, lol.

Well as we sit right now, I guess the wife went ahead and said whatever on putting the 77k tranny in and now just wating for completion. Acura did say that they will check it out before install but who knows? Then it will be motor mounts not covered and so on..

Well If you or any other readers know of something we could say or do, Please let us know. Were not lookin for constant free handouts from acura, just a dependable car.

I have half a notion to go pick it up today (sunday) leave a check in the drop box for the oil change and leave a letter but she says no? Go figure.

Again to you and the other responders,

A Great BIG Thanks!!!

This is not true. Almost all of the 'replacement' trannies were just that--refurbished ones. They took the guts from failed trannies, replaced the broken parts, installed them in a brand new housing, and used them for the recall replacements. If you read the fine print it's within their rights to use a refurbished one for the warranty service.

I asked a family friend at my local dealership, who also is the manager of their service department.

Depends on when you had it replaced. Later models were redesign and new. Earlier on they were refurbished, but not now. Its hard to tell when they switched over.

He stated at his dealership now, at least, they don't use refurbished ones since about 2004-05 timeframe. And even then he said they tried not to use refurbished ones. The only time they used them was when the lawsuit came out and acura anouced the recall, everyone was bringing them in and they had no choice but to order refurbished ones.

As for that fine print on the warranty service, he said they doesn't apply to recalled part since the DOT & NHTSA will not allow they to send the same recalled part back on the roads. It has to be redesigned or upgraded to safely resolve the issue in the first place. Thats why Acura first used oil jets in the transmissions that were recalled because they thought that was the initial problem.

--------

Thats just what he told me in a nut shell about how his dealership works on this recall and many like it. I'm not saying thats what all of them do. And I do stand corrected. They apparently used refirbed ones
