Does an Extended Warranty on 2002 TL Replacement Transmission Make Sense
I have a 2002 TL Type S auto. The transmission just went our on me at 93K (just made it before the 100K extended transmission warranty expired).
The dealer is replacing it under warranty and the new one comes with only a 1 yr/12K warranty. For $250 they are offering a 3yr/36K extended warranty. Any opinions on if this makes sense? I typically blow-off extended warranties, but given the 2002 TL transmission history, I'm wondering if in this case I should get it. Thanks |

Just started acting up last week out of nowhere. I first noticed a couple of times from a standing start I would feel a minor jolt when accelerating. Then later that day I eased off the gas to change lanes and the engine slipped out of gear, rev'd up and slammed back into gear.
Next time I drove it was to the dealer and they confirmed it was the transmission. The only warning sign was at my 90K service my mechanic told me that the transmission oil was really dirty and asked if I had skipped the change at 60K. When I told him I hadn't, he said he wanted to check the transmission oil every 7.5K miles to make sure there weren't any problems developing with the transmission. |

Pay the extra money for the warranty. It is well worth it. I'm also surprised that you didn't get the 3yr/36,000 mile warranty with the replacement. I did. The 1yr/12,000 mile warranty was for the after market tranny and the 3 yr was for the OEM.

If your dealership give you any BS about the warranty, just call acura's corporate office and ask to speak with the divisional manager. The rep may just write down your question or complaint and then the divisional manager will get back to you in a few days. But they will clear up the warranty information with the acura dealership.
I did this last year when acura refused to fix my car when they previously told me a few weeks prior that they were going to fix it. Make a long story short, I contacted the corporate office about my mishap, and received a free tranny and only had to pay for labor. A wonderful outcome that was. |
