Can some1 inform me all the required steps of changing your own oil?
I'm reaching my 30k mile service soon (currently 29k) and I was planning on doing what Edub did, but one step further. I've never manually changed oil myself and was wondering if I need to do anything other than
#1 unscrew the oil drain plug. #2 unscrew the oil filter. #3 put new filter on. #4 screw drain plug back in. #5 put new oil in. Am I missing something? Do I really need to torque the oil filter to spec? Where/how do you transport the used oil after you are done? Do I need to flush out the coolant? Or is it ok to just add more water/fluid in the reserve container?

The filter needs to go on 3/4 of a turn once it touches the filter mounting point. You'll know that happens when it isn't as easy to "spin". Also, make sure you get a new crush washer for the oil drain bolt (important) from acura or honda (17mm if I remember correctly????) and I've heard you should change your drain bolt once every other change or so. I'm seeing the merits of that as I rounded my drain bolt off my last change.

I just did my oil change yesterday.
Steps 3 and 4 are interchangable. Put oil in the filter before you put it back on and put a little oil on the rubber seal. After your done check for leaks, drive around for a little while and then check for more. Your done. The drain plug itself is 17mm and the crush washer is 14mm (I picked mine up from a local Honda dealer for $0.25). My 99TL manual says to torque the drain bolt to 33 ft-lbs. I recommend using a torque wrench just to be safe. Hope this helps Last edited by mskeen : 08-19-02 at 10:38 AM. |
