Jeff! I have a problem with my door sills
Austin519, I borrowed your picture to explain my problem.
At the time I installed door sills I cleaned plastic pieces with ethyl alcohol for about 20-25 minutes. It was 65 degrees outside. It lasted for 3 weeks. Today, when I tried to get into the car, my leg got caught with the door sill, which later fell off and got bent. When I checked the remaining sills, they easly came out. I know the problem is with the tape. Check out those sills (borrowed pic from Austin519) ![]() Now look at mine! I got eleven stripes of tape (3M? maybe) ![]() Just PM me, because I have to send it back.

ya mine came with all one piece of 3m on the back so it sticks the whole length.
that patchy tape allows water and air to get in between the sill and the plastic sill. i think you get a new nick name. hey patchy. |

hey austin,,
what do you mean proto-type? mine looks like that too? i thought this was his way for saving cost or cutting corners. so far i dont have any problems but i do notice it feeling kinda spongy when i press on it..... im not complaining, but i dont want to run into any problems either. you might want to check with all the GB folks i did too. unless we are an exception... thx

Well mine already came up, and bent. I know I cleaned it well enough, but it still came up.

Guys, those sills are not prototype. And it's not to save money either.
Here's why we do the sills like that now. With the old method of full tape, there were problems with sills falling off due to water/dirt being trapped beneath the tape. Due to the ridges in the plastic sill, the tape wasn't getting and "even bite" on the plastic. The parts on the ridges were stuck better than the low parts. We had issues with the sills so messed around with it. The tape we use now (the strips) is a slightly thicker and higher grade 3M tape (it's not some cheap imitation brand, we only use 3M). We just put pieces on because now those individual pieces are all getting full adhesion to the plastic. We've been doing it for many months now, and have shipped out more of the sills with this style tape than the old full style of taping. We've actually had fewer problems with sills falling off. Some sills are always going to fall off, I thought it would happen less with the TL sills due to the design of the factory sills, but apparently it happens more than all our other models. Don't know why. I think the sill adhesion has more to do with silicone protectants/factory mold release agents, etc. than it does with the tape. We've tested this tape numerous times. And the stuff is incredibly strong. With the amount of tape used on just 1 sill, it will hold down a piece of 1/16" aluminum well enough for us to bend it, and that is applying a lot more force than a foot catching on 1/32" aluminum and not pulling the sill out without damage. this new way actually costs us a little more. The tape is significanlty more expensive because we can't buy it in the same volume quantity as our dash kit tape, plus it's just more expensive. Also, it takes the guys longer to apply the tape, with the old method we'd just tape a big sheet of metal and cut the sills out of that. Just because there is less tape being used does not mean it costs us any less. Jarek, email me at apsignworks@hotmail.com I was unable to access this forum all week due to isp problems and the acuraworld server, so now my PM box is full and it would be faster if you'd email. If anyone else has adhesion problems, email me also. Not if you think your sills might be falling off down the line, if there is a problem now. In the future, we will start sending out adhesion promoters with the sills to help prevent this. Never thought it was necessary since cleaning the plastic should be good enough. But I guess it will be necessary as a preventive measure. This only seems to happen with the higher end cars (ie. Acuras, BMW's, and Lexus). We never get problems with Nissan sills falling off, or Hondas. But we have a horrible time installing kits on Bimmers or Lexus. They must condition your plastic more or something, we haven't figured it out yet. |
