'92 Integra won't start...

Hi.

I have a 1992 Acura Integra. I love the car and its been good to me so far, but sometimes when I turn the key it just doesn't start. The starter sounds healthy. I end up trying a few times, waiting a minute, trying a few more times and then it just works.

This behavior is spotty; it seems to come and go.

Any idea whats going on here?

On the times when you turn the key and it doesn't start... What does happen? Does the motor turn over or not?

I don't *think* so

The starter makes its normal sounds (ie, not just clicking) but the activity is starter only.

I don't know cars well enough but I think that there is no ignition going on. Its not like it almost starts then sputters; it actually just starts or doesn't start.

Sorry, its tricky to describe sounds. I don't think that the engine is turning over as the only sound I hear is starter.

The main relays in these early 90s Hondas are known to go bad. Try taking out the main relay circuit board and checking for cracked soldering. You can fix it with a soldering iron if you're cheap or you can buy a new one for 50 bucks.

Yeah the PGMFI Relay (also known as the main relay) is known to go bad. Before you rip it all out though, when you turn the key to position II, do you hear a humming for a second from under the back seat? If so then your PGMFI relay is fine and you probably have an electrical issue in the ignition system. Ignition coils and modules are known culprits for no start conditions as well.
