Detonate under heavy throttle???

Im thinking about purchasing an 04 TL, but when I test drove it and went WOT the CEL started blinking. I quickly backed off. The owner says its because it had 87 oct. in it and the lower octane makes it detonate?? True or bull??? Help please, thanks

Not sure about that, but I did accidently pumped quarter of a tank of oct 87 gas onto my 07 TL b4 when it was only 2 months old. It didn't really do anything and still drive normal. But mine was mix only quarter tank of 87 oct and is still brand new.

Mine question is though, why the heck does the owner want to pump 87 oct in it if he knows recommended fuel is 91 oct. Plus how long has he been doing that...who knows he might have been doing the 87 oct for a while and already did some permanent dmg to the engine.

If I were u I probably won't buy it.

Agreed.. Walk away. I've driven my car (04 TL) with 87 octane, and really feel no real significant difference other than a slight decrease in power. Unless he has messed with the ECU, it should be able to compensate for lower octane and cut back timing enought for the car not to dentonate. I'm sure the low octane gas doesnt help, but I would guess there is something else going on there and a tank of premuim isn't the fix.

WALK AWAY! when i took my car across Europe I wound up in rural Estonia and the only thing they had was leaded 74 octane (no cats).the car lost one of its balls but otherwise drove fine. 86 is not going to do that to a car. maybe if there is watter in the fuel!
