New owner of a 2008 TL Type S

Hey guys, I’m proud to announce that I am picking up my new TL-S today! I’m just curious to all the other Type S owners out there as to what they have done to improve their car? Any recommended mods, and where to get them? I’ve heard of a DVD nav crack or something of the sort? Where can I get that?
So far I’ve got the 3M rock chip protection, paint sealant, and leather and interior protector. I figure that would be a good investment to keep the car looking new. I plan to drive this car for 5 years plus. Anyway, just feeling the crowd and seeing who’s out there. I am excited to share stories about my new car and hear more from other owners!

Welcome

Im sure you will be quite happy with your new ride, I dont have any mods to recommend as far as performance, the only thing I did was take the stock Michelin tires off because they are absolutely horrible in the snow, replaced them with Continental Conti Extreme Contacts. I also plan on going to a ceramic brake pad since the stock pads leave a ton of dust. I added a 10" subwoofer in my trunk to give the stock audio system a little extra.

I am somewhat concerned about the handling of the car in the snow, I heard that it is not great. I live in Canada so we get our fair share of the white stuff, although its all gone now. I believe the car comes standard with the Michelin all season tires?
As for the 10 inch sub. The audio system comes with a factor sub woofer right? I wouldn't mind upgrading to an aftermarket one because I know that stock audio systems usually lack in the base department. What type of sub did you get? How easy was it to swap? Obviously you installed an extra amplifier for the new sub?

Yeah the stock Michelin all seasons really suck in the snow, you can see the ratings on Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels and they rate pretty poor. The conti's are not snow tires but offer waaaaaay better traction than the OEM tires. As far as the speaker set up: I have a 10" Kicker comp. subwoofer with a Kicker ZX200.2 amp. I used a basic line out converter which I used to tap signal from the factory subwoofer connection, this allows control of the subwoofer output right from the head unit. The factory sub is currently disconnected.

Can anyone offer any guidlines in regards to break in procedures? My dealership told me that there was no specific "break-in" procedure, but to just drive normally and to vary the speed often. Is there any specific RPM limitation for the first 500 miles or so?

I varied the speed when I could and I tried to keep below 4000 rpms for the first 500 miles (but I have the 6MT). I also didn't use cruise control, even when on the highway and I didn't drive over 70 mph.

DO NOT get the break-in oil changed until 1000 miles minimum...I think I waited until 3000 miles. Also, if you want to go with full synthetic, start it at the first oil change. I don't think the MID knows what kind of oil you use so you can likely go longer on full synthetic. I use a blend and get it changed every 4000 miles.

According to the owner's manual the breakin period is around 700 miles. I gave it good 1400 miles for a breakin by avoiding hard accelerations. The breakin for the Braking is around 500 miles, if I remember correctly.

I would use regular oil, no synthetic for the first 2~ 3 oil changes. This is to help get the metal deposites/particles out of the system when changing oil. You could then move onto Synthetic........

My '06 TL 6MT currently has 9040 miles on it. I'll probably use synthetic for the next oil change. Too bad it's going to get returned to the dealer on Oct.28, 2008 (Lease will be over).

Um... that's what the break-in oil is for.

Describe hard accelerations? For the most part I've been taking it pretty easy within the first couple hundred miles but I couldn't resist opening it up a little bit . Should I be concerned about reving the engine high for short periods of time or is a little goose of gas here and there ok?

A little here and there shouldn't be a problem. But, I would play it safe.

Of course, there are always those that say, "Drive it like you stole it!"

Hey guys. This is my first post. I recently purchsed an '08 TL S-Type also. Going back to the original question posted here, Are there any aftermarket parts that anyone has heard about or used or would recommend? I am really happy with the car stock, but more power is always better, right? Thanks for all your replies in advance.

Personally, I'd say only an aftermarket CAI. I decided not to go that route and just got a K&N instead. I am only interested in rims now. My stock wheels are getting scuffed to hell. I have not seen a TL yet that's over 2 years old with "clean" rims.
