I was listening to Car Talk on the radio this past weekend...and they were talking about using something other than the manufacturer's recommend viscosity, which is usually 5w-20 these days. They did not recommend it. They claim that with all of the testing that's done these days, 5w-20 has been found to perform the best...year round The days of using a thinner oil in the winter and thicker oil in the summer are over.
I don't recall them mentioning anything about standard versus synthetic, but they did say that modern standard oils can be used for 4k miles with no issues.

Wait so they didn't recommend it but it's found to perform the best? I'm confused

i've been going 10k miles with valvoline full synth on my corolla. these oils have plenty of additives in them to go the distance (as do most off-the-shelf synths),...... what you have to watch is the engine contaminants. Blackstone is my friend these days.
