New threads appearing as read

Hey guys\gals,

I love the new site and all of the new changes but I've noticed something odd. Maybe it's just me but somtimes when I visit any section of the forum, threads that I have not read do not appear bold, they appear as if I have read them. This does not always happen but more often than not threads appear this way for me. Am I loosing my mind or is this a new rollout bug?

Thanks

Well - the default timeout for any session is something like 5 minutes. It's possible for you to be viewing the forum, leave your computer for 5 minutes, and any thread that was created in the 5 minutes since you left, but before your session timed out on the server, would not show up as read and not bold.

Does that sound like what may be happening? It could also be a problem with your browser's cookies so the operating system and browser / version you are using would be helpful too.

nah, it's usally when I first start my PC at home for the evening. I'll go in and poke around what I know are threads I have not read but they appear as ones I have. OS is XP pro SP2 and IE 6 SP2.

I'll keep a better eye on it, I thought this may be something y'all had seen before.

Hmm - haven't seen that before but Jon and I will take a look at it - post any more details you realize.

I have the opposite problem -

sometimes I'll leave the lounge, for instance, re-enter and threads I have read are marked as unread.

I've noticed this as well but attributed it to the fact that I have not looked at the second page of the thread, if I only read the first page then leave and comeback it appears as if I have not read it. Unless, of course, you are acting in your lounge mode and being a smart ass then bite me

no - this happens on one page threads as well - I think it has something to do with time cuz it's always like the top five-ten threads in the forum that this happens to.

I just tested this again and see the problem in any forum. Take the NSX forum and the 1st gen TL forum for example, I have not been to either in many months, yet when I enter either forum all threads appear as if I have read them. I hope I don't miss anything good in the NWS forum

Yes, even if you don't go into a forum, once you read even one post and then leave, all posts to that point are marked as read. So when you come back, only new posts since your last visit *to the site* show up, not posts since your last visit *to the forum.*

I agree - that's the way it's supposed to happen - it does that on all the forums I visit

it doesn't mark a previously read thread as unread tho - there's def a problem with that.

does this happen only when you click back instead of the forum name in the breadcrumbs?

nah - it'll happen if I click to go to the main forums page and then click back into the lounge - or if I leave the site and then come back

So what your'e saying is, if I come to the site at 10:00 AM and read one new post in the lounge then leave and come back at 10:02 AM, every new post on the site that was new at 10:00 AM but I didn't read at 10:00 AM will now be marked as read at 10:02AM? I understand the counter thingy on the front page that tells me how many new posts there have been since my last visit but If I have not read them I would think that they would still be marked as unread, that's the way other forums I visit are.
