98 LS Starter Jams

Hi, my daughter has a 98 Integra LS. Last week, she went to start the engine, it intially turned over, but the starter stopped turning with a loud clunk ....

When turning the key, you could hear the solenoid kick in, but the starter didn't turn. We put the car in 5th gear and rocked it back and fro until the engine could be seen to rotate ... starter will start turning, but will quickly stop with a loud clunk.

I hope it was the starter, and have replaced it with a reman unit ... just the same.

I have taken the plugs out and you can rotate the engine using the bolt on the a/c pump, and this will allow the starter to turn, but it still seems to jam with a clunking sound ...

Any thoughts?
