Automatic Transmission problem
Ill try to be quick.
1992 Acura Integra B18 Automatic transmission. When ingaging in gear i can here something happen, but the car doesnt move. Open the hood and i hear something spinning, sounds loose. Someone said it could be the Flex plate, but im not sure. My questions. Q- What is this most likely? if anyone has a clue or idea that i can check out. -What Transmissions can i swap with this one? I think thats my best bet, unless the problem is fixable. Thanks jeremy |

How could i figure out if thats the problem?
Anything quick just to see? Trying to avoid getting a whole new tranny... cost too much. even the used ones from the junk yards aren't cheap. Ill change my search to the torque converter... i was on page 14 of "automatic transmission" lol thanks |

You can't really figure it out.
Only way is to take it to a transmission shop and have them test it out. Since you're only getting it when you throw it into gear that when the torque converter is engage. I'm not a automatic specialist so i couldn't tell you, thats just my .02 cents.

finally my area of specialty lol
Does the car move at all? In any gear? Have you tried pulling it down all the way into manual low and taching it up a bit? like previously stated, from the sounds of it I would be most concerned with the flex plate and or torque converter. My reconmendation to you is to have it checked out. Many shops including mine have a free diagnosis. Let me also say that I wouldnt do a junkyard trans, your paying money for something that could be in the same exact condition as yours; and to top it off you just paid a shop to r&r it and not have it work. Sorry to hear the bad news let me know whats going on....... |

Well i just got my hopes up with some new online info.
A common mix up that people thing are tranny problems, but its not. ""Broken Half Shafts (CV Shaft) On front drive vehicles are often mistaken for transmission problems. A easy way to tell the shaft is broken is the car grinds going back into park. (since the wheel is no longer attached to the transmission the breaks cant stop the rotation.) Also in some cases the speedometer will register even though your not moving. And it may still roll when in park"" Automatic Transmission Repair Advice So im keepin my fingers crossed and im going to try to see if it will still roll while in park. and never put it in drive and watched the speedo to see. Parts place just quoted $70 for a cv shaft for each side. Not bad... and probably easier to fix than the torque converter. still havent had time to put it on blocks and take a look and i just found the info half a second and wanted to put it on here. not sure if thats the fix, but just tryin to keep it posted. thanks |

Unfortunately i couldnt find a decent write up online, few sites sayin its a pain in the @$$ but not too much else.
Ive got most of the stuff off trying to get the assembly off and haf the shaft-wheel part of the shaft off but wont disconnect from the tranny. Whats the trick? the manual shows him putting a screw driver in and prying the big metal ring that goes around the shaft, but i didnt have any luck. Friend of mine said i have to loosin a ring around the shaft... ya ok.. sure. so im wondering if theres any thing i could look at online to see whats going on with the stuff i cant see. Im goin to have to have a friend look at it tommorrow and he'll know what to do. but i still need a personal referance to make sure theres not something hes missed and for me when hes not around.

Ok........since im kinda unclear where you are in the process of disassembly ill start from scratch.......
1) remove the wheel 2) Remove the cotter pin on the ball joint nut; and then remove the nut (should be a 14 mm) 3) lift the ball joint out of the lower control arm with a prybar or LARGE screwdriver (this allows clearance to remove the axle from the trans) 4) once the hub assembly is hanging pop the axle out of the trans by inserting a prybar or LARGE screwdriver between the axle and the axle housing 5) once the axle is removed from the trans side remove the axle nut on the hub (should be a 36 mm) **you will need a impact gun** 6) after the nut is removed you may need to hammer the axle out of the hub due to corrision buildup on the splines 7) Reverse process for installation any other questions I can snag some pics from work tomm for ya if you may need them. hope this helps. ![]() |

hmm... guess you could say i did that.. but backwards and took down alot more.
took off the wheel hub nut took down the dampening fork then took out the pin and nut on the balljoint and i took down the swaybar bolt but didnt remove it completely pushed and pulled till the shaft came out of the hub side now its stuck on the tranny side.

Its alive!
Thanks for the help gfd and everyone thankfully i had someone to help who knew what was going on or it might have been another two days for me. 1. Remove wheel and brake calliper then brake rotor drain transmission fluid 2. remove wheel hub nut, 1 1/4 inch socket, comes off easily 3. remove ball joint, requires ball joint puller or a seperator fork. Optional-if ya dont know what your doin or need more room 4 remove dampining fork from shock 5. loosen sway bar (probably uneccesary, but pops told me too before we knew what we were doin.) - 6. remove cv shaft from hub section, might require a good bit of force..aka, hammer 7. Next to the transmission, around the cv shaft is a big metal ring (2" or so) We used a big screw driver and hammer to pry that open and get the ring loose enough to pull out. (I didnt do it personally so im not positive on details) 8. Cv shaft should come out of transmission, if its too hard to pull out, pry on the ring a little more and it should pop out. 9. Breath... water/beer... the hard parts done 10. take the new cv shaft and basically shove it back in the tranny, make sure everything falls into place for the 2" metal ring and all that fun stuff. 11. Put it all back together, fork>ball>brake essembly>Hub nut (1 1/4")>wheel 12. put in tranny fluid!!!! Dextron or Honda Atf stuff (Im going to run dextron to let everything flush out then do another flush and then Honda atf) 13. double check everything... watch out for the copper pins in there too, 1 on the ball joint and 1 on the bottom of the hub. sockets needed... 1 1/4, 3/8, 11/16, 1/2 ... i know a few more, but thats most if i missed anything sorry, but thats more info than anything else i could find online. should have taken pics, but it was raining Next project... A/C and radio dont turn on. A/C lost its controll nob and radio just doesnt get anything. need to check the fuse but missing a fuse box top.... *sigh* Cleanin her up now and hopefully ill get some pics on here soon. cant take any credit for whats been done, but still need a ref. for where i started off.

just an fyi the socket sizes you listed may have "fit" but are incorrect for the car. They should all be metric; which it may have worked out for you but if something is a little rusty or deformed it may strip out for someone else.
just wanted to clarify so you wouldnt get any of this ![]() |
