What is considered burning alot of oil in a GSR?

I have an 01 gsr with 153xxx on it. My friend who works at a honda dealership said all hondas burn oil and a quart and a half every 1500 miles is OK. Anyone have a gsr that burns a bit of oil but runs good?

Im not sure myself, 1/2 of ur oil every oil change seems to be quite a bit of burnoff. I mean im sure its not affecting the car as far as performance and such like you'd think it would be, but damn, imo your going through a lot of oil. my 95 civic 1.5l didnt even burn that much between oil changes, and towards the end of it it burnt...a...lot...

1.5 qrts in 1500 miles is normal? Not quite. My motor when stock burnt maybe .5 qurts between oil changes (4500 - 5000 miles) and I pounded on the car every chance I got. It had about 80K on it.

Thats about normal for a healthy engine thats being pounded on. GSR's have a reputation for burning a little oil while in the VTEC ranges. However 1.5 quarts in 1500 miles is excessive. You should look into getting a leakdown test. I would put money on worn valve seals.

well, maybe I was wrong. I was running 5w-30 and it was burning a bit. Then, I switch to 10w-30 synthetic and some people said it'll burn even quicker because its thinner. I don't know. Its an 01 and it has all highway on it. Runs perfect and drives smooth. Not a clue....

10-30 is not thinner than 5-30. Its thicker at colder temperatures. The people you are talking to are uneducated about these things.
And by uneducated you can feel free to read stupid as thats what I really mean.

Yes. I know that. But synthetics are thinner then conventionals. 10w-30 synthetic is thinner then 5w-30 conventional. I know that sounds weird but i've read that many times before. If you have a site that says different put it in your reply.

at the white text.

If you're not leaking at all, I'd agree that 1.5 quarts is a bit much to be burning in between oil changes...my old teg lost about that much, but it was cause my oil pan gasket was on the way out.

If you not leaking then you are burning way to much. Not to say your car wont run great, but you will need to keep you eye on the oil level because its most likly going to get worse. I'd say either you have a cylinder that has lost bore, or you fried some piston rings. If you don't want to rebuild, then just keep driving and adding oil between changes.

Plus the smoke adds a sneaky, batman style effect which some ppl really dig =D

Just stick to what the manual recommends. 10w-30 is 10w-30 no matter if it's conventional or synthetic; it's the viscosity rating at low-high temperatures.

My GSR burns quite a bit of oil. I've gotten to the point where it was running dry (oops!) and it threw a check engine code. Filled it up, reset the ECU and it's been good ever since. It burns at least 2 quarts when it hits 3000 miles or so. I'm assuming it's the valve seals because I haven't had any leaks since I had the car.
