adding a trailer hitch

I need to add a trailer hitch to my 04 MDX for pulling a light trailer and a dirt bike (approx 400 lbs total).

I can get an after market hitch and wiring kit for about $175, or get the Acura hitch for closer to $250.

But to have Acura install it, they require that coolers for the PS and Transmission be installed, which I'm sure will add hundreds of dollars to total install cost. I know that these extra parts are not necessary for pulling 400 lbs, but am I going to nullify my warranty if I install the hitch w/o these other parts?

thanks for any help - matt

Acura's hitch costs about $1000 installed at most dealerships. The coolers certainly help the vehicle but a 400 lb trailer is very light. I don't think it would be a warranty issue, since they would have to prove that both the install of the hitch and improper towing is what caused the failure of component X. Realistically, pulling 500 lbs isn't much at all.

I am going to pick-up my '05 MDX this weekend, and would like to also add an after-market trailer hitch. This hitch will simply be used to hold our bike rack.

Can anyone make any suggestions as to what kind? I know of hidden hitch, but they have a disclaimer saying that it won't work with a full-size spare. Does the MDX have a full-size spare?

hitch

I have a hidden hitch on my 2002 mdx - and use it to pull 2 sea- doos out of the water. It does not affect the spare at all. I recommend this hitch.

Do you have pics of this hitch? Who manufactured the hitch - Honda?

I bought the Hidden Hitch that was recommended for the '05 MDX online (www.etrailer.com).

It cost around $157, shipped, and took all of 25 minutes to install.

The only tricky part was removing the rubber hangers to lower the exhaust. But once I figured out how to remove one (by sliding it off), they all came off pretty easily.

Again, very simple. Having the hitch, for the sake of our bike rack, is fantastic.
