NOOB - replacing shift knob

Hi gang,
I just got a 2002 MDX and love it. Wow, black on black - this vehicle is really something. I've loved the MDX forever, and now finally got it!

I ordered (and have) the '04 shifter (black w/wood trim) and have no clue how to install it. I know it's idiotic, but can someone give some details here to assist?

As far as the ride goes, I'll post pics soon. Just got the windows tinted to match the backs, and got the factory Navi unit from ebay. Also got a fob and programmed it - so if you need help there just send a message over.

Again, thanks in advance.....

James

I've replaced the shifter on my 08 MDX to the wood/leather combo. looks much nicer. I presume the mechanism is the same for yours. first, pry the little tab off on the shift deck using a screw driver with a rag over it. this allows you to put the shifter in N so you can work on it. (you put the screw driver into the hole and move the shift knob.) if you wrap your fingers around the shift boot about 1 inch below the bottome of knob portion you'll feel two clips. (hold the new shift knob up beside it to get an idea for where they are and how they work), then wrap a towel around the boot and GENTLY use a pair of channel locks or plyers to squeeze the clips in and pull down the shift boot. these clips hold the boot in place around the shifter. be patient! this took me like an hour to get and I didn't want to damage anything. once you feel the clips click in, you can pull the boot down and expose the screw that holds in the shift knob. once you take out that screw you can replace the knob, put the screw back in and then raise the boot up and it will click back into place. you are done.
