Rattle in Front End - Brakes??

I have had a persistent rattle coming from the left front suspension in my 2001 MDX. I notice it most when driving on a rough road at 30 mph.

I have replaced the stabilizer links and stabilizer bushings. These did not fix the problem. There is no play in the ball joints. The control arm bushings are slightly cracked, but are otherwise sound.

Over the weekend, I tried riding the brakes slightly when going over the rough road, and I noticed that the rattle went away. This leads me to think that the brake pads are rattling against the caliper.

Has anyone experienced this problem? I have not yet had the chance to pull off the wheel and inspect the brakes.

Thanks in advance for your input

This could be possible as the MDX pads have a pad separator spring. It could be possible that you're missing one or both (looks like V's inserted into the top of the pad backing). Take the wheel off, flip the caliper up and find out.

Ya, listen to dean, he's the master of killing all brake issues (helped me several times with a ghost issue), the brake master chief!

Thanks for this info! I have the same rattle. Will bring to Acura to have it checked out.

Dean,

I finally had a free weekend to work on my MDX. I replaced the four clips and reapplied brake grease to the backs of the pads and shims. This significantly reduced the rattle, but did not entirely eliminate it. The caliper pin had a bit of play in it. The rubber tip showed sign of abraision (burring?). Should I replace the upper and lower pins on the caliper? Any other ideas for eliminating the rattle?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Tim

The pins and boots generally don't need replacement (unless they've gone dry and start sticking). If you're in the LA area, I can check your vehicle out. This is starting to make me wonder if the MDX brake system might have a design flaw in terms of knockback.

Dean,

I would be happy to let you work on my MDX, but LA is a bit far from my home in Houston.

Should I replace the entire caliper sub assembly? I can get one for ~$200. I am reasonably handy.

BTW, when I first took the MDX into the dealer for this rattle, they replaced the bearing assembly on the side having the rattle - front driver side. But, this did not fix the rattle.

For this, you pretty much have to use as much diagnostics skill as you have. Start shaking suspension peaces, including the hub and look for play or listen for rattles. Generally, its an easy way to empty your wallet by buying a bunch of parts first. If you need some remanufactured calipers, let me know. I carry A1 Cardone calipers.
