aluminum wheels

I am getting ready to purchase new tires for a 04 Rsx and in the manual it reads "improper wheel weights can damage your vehicles aluminum wheels, use only genuine acura wheel weights for balancing".
How true is this?
I am thinking about going thru Tire Rack to purchase tires and have NTB install them but don't want to damage my car.

Also, I'm trying to decide between the OEM Michalins or Sumitomo tires.
I have put 80,000 miles on the Michalins so should I get the OEM's again?

They might be referring to "clip-on" type wheel weights that are "hammered" on to the wheel rim edge. This not only can gouged the rim but it also damages the wheels "clear coat" finish which will eventually lead to corrosion. To avoid this insist that the dealer you are going to have mount your wheels has experience with aluminum rims. And ensure they use "stick-on" wheel weights placed on the "inside or backside" of your wheel.
