My 91 Acura Legend has started to have erratic idling. Both in park and while driving - how do I check what the potential problem could be

Well, we need to do this as a doctor would, and observe the conditions under which it happens.

Does it do it both hot and cold, is it erratic on acceleration, is there any check engine lamp lit?
