Low Battery vs Battery Charger
The battery on my 03 TL Type S is showing the non-green eye, indicating insuffcient charge. It is five years old and driven somewhat infrequently.
I really don't have a problem replacing the battery myself if that is the cause. My question/issue is that when I saw it was low I threw it on the trickle charger (5 amps down to 2 for a couple hours) WITHOUT removing the battery from the car. Then (and only then) like all good men I read the Owner's manual and there is this caveat about not charging the battery when it is still in the car for fear of "damaging electronics". Yipes! It was at this point that I pulled the plug on the charger. I was careful about polarity (duh) and had no sparking (put the gator clips on before plugging the charger in so no problems there). I haven't started or even turned the ignition key since doing this so no other background information. My question is how serious do you think this OM warning is? Do you think I have anything to worry about (or I will find out when I turn the key?!) Perhaps this warning is a better safe than sorry type warning ie someone jolting their battery with 55amps for a prolonged time, etc. Or to guard against voltage spikes. I have this paranoia now about possibly frying my ECU or something. any idea what symptoms might present if I have a problem (different set of idiot lights on?) Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for whatever help/info. RZ |

As an officially recognized representative of an Acura dealership, I can only recommend the blah blah blah yakkity shmakkity etc etc etc.
In other words, do it by the book. The tongue in cheek answer is that I've never seen anyone at any place I've worked disconnect the battery from the vehicle to charge it.
