It's what they call an automatic transmission pulser, it indicated vehicle speed for purposes of the computer.

I don't believe it's a big deal, especially with the tranny out

If it's in, just take it for a ride and see what comes about, I'd say....

well i got the tranny from a wrecking yard and it was broken, and i got a 30 day warranty on the tranny but i dont wanna take the tranny back cuz its almost brand new and only paid $200 for it so i put in the tranny with it broke but cant test it yet till i put the head and everything else back on.

and someone told me that if thats broken my tranny wont know when to shift...but i dont know if i believe them cuz i thought thats what the shift and lock solenoids did

The ECU and TCU depend on sensor readings to decide when to shift. The shift solenoids and gear selector does the actual shifting. Without proper sensor signals to the ECU and TCU, your tranny may very well not know when to shift.

ok well i put my car all back together today, started her up she ran just fine, took it for a spin and tranny shifted nicely. the only problem i had was a rocker fell off so i had to pull over and fix it on the side of the road
