Yes it is a transmission problem. See your dealer. This is a very well documented problem. The 2nd gen TL transmissions dropped like flies.

Check your VIN with any acura dealer.
How many miles on it?
There is a extended warranty through Acura.

What is the real poop on the 5AT in 99-03 CL, TL, Odyssey??
Mine was replaced at ~60 K miles by original owner.
I now have ~ 120K miles on it. If you've seen any of my posts I had been experiencing a " shudder" as it changed from 3rd to 4th and occasionally 4th to 5th under normal light throttle. I just changed out the fluid last week and the shudder has gone away. What reasonable expectation can I have that the tranny is going to last much longer??????

Difficult to quantify. The whole reason for the campaign was an oil jet kit for better lubrication, which I'm sure you are aware of if you've done the research that I think you have.

How'd the fluid look when coming out?

It looked good, still quite red and not really smelly. There was some gunk around drain plug but likely normal. It had been changed about 22K miles ago before I bought it.

And yes I have done a crapload of research and am quite obsessed with the issue now. I made absolutely certain that the tranny had been replaced for peace of mind before I bought it. I apparently should have done a lot more pre-buy research however as it appears that the replacement trannies are no better than original. Don't get me wrong I love the car, and in spite of the ridiculous gas prices am still driving it.
I have driven many cars since 1970 and many of them had 200K miles plus and never had an issue with tranny failures. This tranny has about 60 K miles and I'm scared to drive it in any other manner than "grandma mode"

I'm guessing you have to be careful in your response?

I have a question.

My '03 TL has been recently having trouble (2 X in the last week) also a month or so ago, getting out of Park in to Reverse. The steering wheel lock is not engaged.

After about 5-10 tries, finally I was able to get it into reverse.

I had the Transmission recall applied serveral years back..

I would assume this is some sort of Transmission issue. I assume this would be covered under the Standard Powertrain warranty?

Thanks,

Jeff
