Transmission problem
My 98 RL is clicking and popping like something is binding going forward but not in reverse. If I ease on the gas it will do this then stop as if the brakes has been pressed. Like I said it only do this drive not reverse. I checked underneath and see that I have lost one of my bolts holding the steering rack, could this be causing this? And I also see that my upper control arms boots are split, what would be the cost for replacements?

Sounds more like a CV joint problem. Check the boots on the joints at the wheels and see if they appear torn. Also, does the noise happen more when the car is turning as opposed to going straight?

This is going to be a tough diagnosis.
Does it do this in every gear?

I replace the bolt in the steering rack that stopped the noise, the cv boots not torn, there is no play in the wheel. But the one thing I notice is that the engine idles up and down that when the trans problem starts. I haven't had a chance to see if it does it in all gears because it starts that after moving about 5 to 10 feet forward. I haven't had a chance to pull the codes but the abs light is also on.

Okay I found out the abs light is a wheel sensor, which is minor. I think my major problem may a bad tranny. Tonight I held the brake and raise the engine in drive and reverse I could hear a grinding or metal against sound as if the clutches are slipping. I also found out that by turning on the air condition it makes the engine idle up and down. I don't think that my luck will be good enough that both problems are cost by the same thing. I'll post how it turns out....Thanks for all the help
