PGM-FI light...
Hello,
I could not get the search to work so I am posting my first post here. I just bought a 90 Legend sedan 5 speed with 192,000 miles for $1200 the other day. Now the PGM-FI light is coming on. I understand it is the fuel injection light and the car had been sitting for a while before I bought it so I filled up the gas tank since it was empty and put some injector cleaner in it. The light is still coming on. Can anyone give me some ideas on where to begin troubleshooting this minor problem? Thanks. |

Sounds like you got a good deal! How's the body for rust, etc.? The PGM-FI light is telling you there's something wrong and it has been detected by the main computer system. The computer is located under the front passenger seat ...if you look there while the car is running, you'll see a flashing light. The light is blinking an error code (elsewhere on this forum you'll be able to find a list of the codes, and what they mean). A simple fix may be to "re-set" the computer. Do this by disconnecting the battery for about 10 minutes. Re-connect, and your error code may go away. If not ...follow the suggestions from the code list. Good Luck!

Yeah, it was blinking once repeatedly. I am told this is the front o2 sensor. I disconnected the fuse and we will see what happens. The body is pretty straight besides a few minor door dings. There is a little rust near the rear wheel well and in the gas cap area which I hear is pretty common. I wonder how much it would cost to get that stuff fixed...

o2 sensors won't usually trigger a code (or a "check engine" light) until the car is under hard acceleration, or unless the wire to the sensor is disconnected. Then it will "re-set" when you turn the ignition off and on again. Are you sure the red light is blinking "repeatedy" ..or is it blinking a certain number of times (up to 18), pausing for a second or two, then starting again? There is no fuse to pull that will disable one or both o2 sensors.
The wheel-well and gas cap area rust (affectionately known as "Honda Rot") ..is indeed quite common. This can be a DIY fix if you have the time and energy ...a body shop can get expensive. Just for fun, drop into a MAACO shop and get a quick estimate. Let us know. |
