Unhappy Ticking Noise

Ever since I bought my 92 Legend last summer it has had a ticking noise that drives me crazy.

When my RPMs are around 1500 I hear it, any lower or higher and it disappears. It occurs even when my car is in park and I rev my engine.

The sound can only be heard from within my car. I have attempted to listen for it while leaning over the engine and having someone else get it to start ticking inside, but the noise must get drowned out by by everything else.

Originally I thought it was the Hydralic Valve Lifters, but then I realized that the 2nd gen legend has rockers instead.

I tried that stupid ATF Type F in the oil for 10km then an oil change and it did absolutly nothing. I use Mobile 1 5w30. I've tried Sea Foam and nothing improved.

A new timing belt was put on before I bought it, but who knows if it was done properly.

I have noticed a bit of oil on some of my spark plugs when changing them.

Has anyone experienced this noise or have any ideas what might fix it.

Thanks in advance

Oil on sparkplugs would be a valve cover gasket. The plug tubes are sealed off by an o-ring like gasket. It is a common problem.

The Legend has Hydraullic valve lash adjusters. Then those wear you will hear a ticking sound much like the one that a hyd lifter makes. The sound may be caused by a small exhaust leak from a cracked manifold. I have never heard of this on a Legend, but Ford Exploders it is common and sounds exactly like a lifter tap.

this is very wierd since you only can hear it in the car.

Try this, taking a broom handle or whatever and have a friend rev it etc..while putting the broom handle on the two valve covers etc to try and pinpoint where the noise is coming from.
