To creatively paraphrase NSX chief engineer Ted Klaus, the upcoming Acura supercar will be like a Nissan GT-R, but built for drivers.
Exactly what does that mean? In essence it will deliver truly world-class performance without an ultra-exotic price tag. It also will maintain the brand’s core man-machine synergy principle.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Speaking during a recent round-table with journalists Klaus would not, however, reveal anything (or at least not much) about the car’s projected price. In fact, he wouldn’t even provide a give-or-take-$50,000 estimate.
Instead he chose a wider spread commenting that it will fall within the range of the Porsche 911. Hardly helpful, that currently covers a range from $80,000 to just over $180,000.
Perhaps suggesting it won’t be near the top of that range Klaus revealed that the, “person excited to own and drive this vehicle will have a tremendous sense that they got back a … sports car experience at a price that is a fraction of those vehicles.”
HOW FAST WILL IT BE?
As for what “those vehicles” are, Klaus elaborated, commenting that benchmarked cars range into the truly exotic, including the Ferrari 458 and McLaren MP4-12C. Less pricey, though equally capable rivals include the Corvette, Audi R8 and perhaps the car the NSX will be compared to most (based on factors of performance and price) the Nissan GT-R.
Can a car still offer a luxurious driving experience without being big, heavy and expensive? We find two vehicles that fit the description, available for just under $30,000, which give you a premium driving experience, without the extra pretentiousness of a big luxury car.
Practically defining a new market segment, the Acura ILX and Buick Verano are small cars, but manage to be full of luxury goodies and technology. Both cars borrow platforms from less premium compacts: the Honda Civic underpins the Acura ILX, while the Chevrolet Cruze provides the basis for the Buick Verano. That said, are these two just dressed up economy cars? And if not, which is the better buy?
Don’t think of the EX37 as a premium compact crossover. Instead, think of it as a hatchback version of the G37 sedan… on stilts. After all, it rides on the same platform and uses the same V6.
For 2013, the EX moves from the 3.5-liter to the 3.7-liter V6, hence the name change from “35” to “37.” That also means the car jumps from having 297 to 325 hp along with a 14 lb-ft bump in torque to 267.
Remarkably, the increased engine displacement and output don’t increase fuel consumption. Instead, the rear-wheel drive model actually gains one mpg on the highway – though the numbers are well short of segment leaders. EPA figures for the rear-wheel drive model come in at 17/25 mpg city/highway while the all-wheel drive dips to 17/24.
People buy crossovers for a variety of reasons and practicality is often near the top of that list. That’s not true of Infiniti’s EX small crossover – at least not next to similarly priced products.
Despite that, a couple of minutes behind the wheel will make a compelling case to put practicality behind pleasure.
Infiniti has curvaceous appeal down to a science and the EX37’s size plays perfectly into that hand.
The brand’s bulbous design borders on baby beluga territory with the much larger QX, but the EX avoids all that. Instead, a sloping hood and roofline leave it looking clean and stylish – something BMW bungled with the X1.
Truth be told, there’s almost nothing to complain about with the EX37’s exterior except for the fact that it doesn’t take any chances – perhaps due to the fact that it’s been on the market for half a decade.
Pleasing aesthetics abound in the cabin as well. Take your pick of the buttons, shift lever or aluminum navigation wheel found in so many other Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. Once again, the design stays well within familiar territory, but in this case it’s hard to criticize the decision.
Winter's icy stranglehold on the northern hemisphere has finally been broken. After months of gray skies and freezing weather spring is finally in the air. Automakers are responding to the warmth and sun by emerging from product hibernation. Companies located in places ranging from South Korea to the United Kingdom have unveiled a bumper-crop of new hardware ranging from sensible to insane. Here are the Top 10 reveals from the 2013 New York International Auto Show.
Baring any surprises, the star of this year's New York Auto Show is likely to be the Mercedes CLA45 AMG, a high-powered version of the brand's stunning new affordable luxury sedan. Other major debuts include the 2014 Cadillac CTS, Acura MDX, updated Honda Odyssey and Hyundai Equus, as well as refreshed version of the Buick LaCross, Regal and Chevy Camaro. Rumors point to a Subaru hybrid reveal while it'll also be the first showing of the controversially designed Jeep Cherokee.
