Thanks.

I have a 46" Samsung DLP in the living room with 5.1 surround sound, but this setup is way cooler.

I just realized I own pretty much ever major console. In the apartment alone I have a N64, PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, and Wii. At home I have an SNES, PS1, Xbox, but unfortunately I sold my Nintendo a decade ago in a garage sale. Oh well, I can still play emulators.

Okay educate me why this is a way better setup. I guess I like to sit on my nice comfy leather recliner and play games on a 46inch hidef tv with my harmon kardon pumping out gears of war in digital suround sound!

Not dogging just curious?

good lord that's some gadgetry!

picked up a new lens. Sigma 20mm f1.8. Needed something wide but also fast that is sharp in the f2 range.

just snapped a photo last night in some pretty low light with it. nice that the FOVC is now only 32mm based on Canon's multiplier of 1.6 so I don't have so stand so far back like with my other lenses!

there are a couple of other options for wide lenses to consider. the sigma 12-24 or the Canon L 16-35, or for half the price, the Canon L 17-40

But I have decided I'm going to go full-frame on the sensor so will pick up a Canon 5D in the next couple of months. They seem to go for pretty cheap on ebay brand new. Under $2300 for the body.

edit: I mean cheaper. That's still a monstrous amount to pay for a body only!!!

Haf - I used the sigma 20 f1.8 for Nikon. Didn't find myself using it too much. There's very few situations where you need a wide, fast prime. But that's just me. The other thing that turned me off was the size of the thing, it's massive! And it's 82mm thread - expensive filters.

I've heard bad things about the sigma 12-24, but for FF, if you need 12mm, that's pretty much your only choice.

The 5d goes for about 2100 here with the Canon rebates..insanely good price for that camera. You'll enjoy noise-free 3200 iso shots.

I said it's a better setup because having a 360/PC combo is just awesome. Plus this monitor is so nice, it looks as good as it would on my TV.

I can have the volume louder at night in my room rather the family room so I don't disturb my roommate.

I don't know, it's just a really nice setup.

Nice lens, haf!

All lenses are big! Get used to it (edit: i should clarify - with a heavy body, and the body grip/battery pack, and sometimes a flash - this thing is heavy already - doesn't really make a difference having a big lense on it!) I can think of quite a few situations where I need a wide fast prime - concert/band photography as well as sitting at a dinner table where I didn't want to (or have room) to stand up and move back to get the people sitting next to me in a picture - a primary reason why I got this,. I wanted to get the 10-22mm sigma but that won't work on a FF sensor...not designed for it. Also, I'm after a minor bit of barrel distortion for some landscape and architectural photography. now that i'm making money on the side from shooting photos i'm after some lenses to help me get some specific things accomplished without relying on photoshop or my lack of skills!

You should check out one of my contacts on flickr - miami fever. check out his "gear" album! he's got a serious array of lenses for his 5D including the rare and discontinued canon 50mm 1.0 L. he takes some lovely street captures. he's got all manner of brands on his canon thanks to some nifty adapters.

Gotcha - I don't usually do dinner table shots so that wasn't a concern for me. I'm happy with just the 50 1.4 for low-light work for now. And yeah, I'd imagine with a vertical grip and a flash, the lens doesn't matter that much. You have to understand I'm using a D50, which is a pretty small body without a flash so the sigma more than doubles the weight.

That's really cool that you have a side job taking shots - I would LOVE to do that. And like I said before, you're going to love the 5d. I want to see what you can do with it =)

As for that 50 1.0 - WOW are you KIDDING me? It's manual focus right? That is INCREDIBLE light-gathering ability. Jeez..that's a whole stop faster than my 50 1.4

You know I didn't realise the D50 was that light if this lens weighs as much as your body! Sheesh I get a workout every time I take my camera out. Not to mention my bag. I've got flash, 5 lenses, filters, mini-tripod, 5 batteries, and whatever else neatly packed in there. It's a very comfortable bag though so it's not a big deal.

You are seeing the 5D for less than 2100? Where? Lowest I've seen - after rebate - is 2279 on ebay.

That 50 f1.0L is AF mate. Pure Canon Camera Porn! Good luck finding one today though. And have you seen how much the 50 1.2L goes for? Too much to justify it over the 1.4 in my opinion.

That guy with the 1.0 also has the sigma 12-24 and loves it for its wideangle. The reviews are for the most part good on amazon. Some people do speak of Sigma quality issues though.

A great site is www.the-digital-picture.com for reviews on canon and sigma lenses.

My colleague picked up the Nikon 85mm 1.4 last week for his D200. Nice lens! Lotsa glass on that puppy!

RPhil, your house is ridiculous. If I lived there, I'm pretty sure I would never leave and fail out of school cause I was busy blasting aliens and crap.

Yeah it's pretty small. Sheesh what kind of bag do you use? I carry around my slingshot 200 with my sigma 18-50 f2.8, nikon 50 1.4, and sb-600.

Hm, maybe that's after triple rebates - but isn't it a lot more expensive down under?

Whew - 50 1.0 AF - you're right, camera porn. How much did that puppy cost? 2 grand at least, i'm guessing.

Interestingly Thom Hogan (Very well respected Nikon reviewer) gives bad marks to the sigma 12-24. http://www.bythom.com/nikon.htm

And yeah the nikkor 85 1.4 is known as the 'cream machine', an awesome piece of glass for portraits.

I spend too much money.

TV, PC, Game consoles, car mods... aye carumba!

The 360 was my last treat. I'm saving my money from now on.

That's a US price I'm quoting on the 5D. Down here it costs 4,500 AUD, or about 3400 US.

Here's my bag....plenty more storage on the other side as well as room for a laptop in the sleeve behind. weatherproof cover is folded and stored in compartment underneath.

Nice - that's a HUGE bag though, do you always carry everything around?

What kind of glass do you have?
