True and good points but the point I'm trying to make here is that someone signed off on these articles going public. I can tell you letters leaving THIS office are scanned to the point of insanity for perfection.

Just today, in another article on sexually harassing Egyption women...

Astonishing survey resultsIn a frequently referenced survey in 2008, nearly two-thirds of Egyptian men admitted to sexually harassing women – and half blamed the women themselves. Eight in 10 Egyptian women say they’ve suffered such harassment, with half saying it occurs daily – yet less than 3 percent have reported abuse to the police.

Proofreaders are probably easily cut when times are rough. Who needs them when we have spell/grammar-check, right?

Ehhh, probably true. I suppose the logic is...

"Since most people either don't read or don't know enough about grammar to know what's right and wrong, wny bother with the expense of proofreading."

I'm wondering if the logic behind this "sloppiness" in print is that we can grab the meaning anyway, so why bother to correct the smaller stuff?

I've heard "the younger generation" use that as an excuse for their ineptitude and laziness too many times. Therefore, you may have a point. And, that's sad.

Which, of course, leads to the whole failure of our society in general--at least in perception--of nobody caring enough to take pride in their work. I know that the evidence of that statement is anecdotal and really doesn't have that much meta analysis behind it, but so often the case is that perception is reality in our world.

I don't think you're out of line at all. Certainly, grammar isn't the downfall of America but, if I understand your point, the fact that so many students don't give a shit about grammar, and school teachers--for whatever reason--continue to pass them to the next grade is just one of the many indicators that this country is in decline. I would agree. If you don't give a shit about being able to speak English properly, chances are likely you take no pride in much of anything you do. Conversely, show me someone who is a stickler for correct and precise grammar and I'll wager the chances are that person performs his/her work at an above-average level.
