You won't see movies like Transformers, Avatar, District 9, The Hangover, etc. competing for Best Picture for the same reason you won't see any of Dan Brown's or James Patterson's novels nominated for a Pulitzer or Nobel Prize. What people need to understand is, the bodies that bestow these awards are not the peers of the general public, they are peers of the writers & filmmakers - so they are appraised on characteristics other than profit or marketing hype.

It sounds like you are looking for the People's Choice Awards. This year, Twilight was the choice of the general public.

Note:
I don't believe I have seen any of the movies nominated, so I am not defending the choices thereof. Sometimes judges get it right, other times not.

How about those dresses though, eh?
Thank you for dropping your knowledge on me Mr. Saturnine. Makes more sense then. Not sure why people are so enthralled in it then.

I think out of all the movies that were nominated...

...the only one I saw was Star Trek.

Yeah, good movie. But, not award material. And, I think the ending was a bit disjointed.

Totally! He played that part so damn good ! I hated the guy, the arrogance, his keen sense of figuring stuff out...oh, wait a minute, this was a movie not reality.

One of the best acting jobs I've seen in a while ! Glad he got it !

(and he was respectful and humble upon acceptance)

I agree The Hurt Locker wasn't fantastic, but I enjoyed watching it

Once again, I could really care less about these awards shows

It's one of those common errors Americans make, Dave.

The phrase SHOULD be, "I couldn't care less." Instead, people mistakenly say, "I could care less."

It's like people who refer to something that was forgotten as "falling between the cracks" instead of "falling in the crack".

Irregardless, let's try and remain calm, cool, and collective on this inflammable topic.
