3.5 rl won't move when put in gear

Hey guys I have a question about my 99 3.5rl. I was coming to a stop light and when I hit the gas to accelerate my car didn't move. It was making a loud crazy noise and it wouldn't move when I put it in drive or reverse. When I got pushed over to the side the car was making a crazy noise like something was rotating but it sounded broken. My first reaction is that the transmission is gone and I need to replace it just like I do with the torque convertor. What do you guys think?

I have been reading about this issue, and it sounds like the extension shaft is stripped or the the gear in the transmission where the extension shaft goes is stripped.
